How to Recruit & Keep Good Volunteers in Your Ministry

What We Will Look At The Continual Volunteer Ministry Leaders Circle

First Step - RECRUIT Crawl/ Walk/ Run The Seven Sins of Recruiting Expect Announcements to Get them Go at it Alone Recruit Life time people – not short term Assume “No” means “Never” Fall into the “BIC” trap Be People driven, not Project driven Give the position the wrong title

First Step - RECRUIT General Recruitment – on-going efforts (ex New Parishioner Packets, surveys to parents, invitations to parish organizations) Specific Recruitment – advertise your need for volunteers (ex Ads in bulletin, newsletter notices, etc) Targeted Recruitment – Personal invitations to individuals to help with specific programs. Find lots of ideas HERE ecrets/VolunteerMatch_101Secrets.pdfHERE

Second Step – Screen/ Interview Our Archdiocese has a procedure. PGC class/ Volunteer Application/ Background Check Ask your Parish office and be diligent or visit Interviews are helpful This PDF ( ource/ViewResource/303 ) is a good starting point for learning more. ource/ViewResource/303

Third Step - Appoint Volunteer position agreement Dates of appointment Key responsibilities Who is the supervisor/ contacts What are non – negotiable’s/ rules Signed and kept by you and the volunteer Find a sample HERE ( urce/ViewResource/597 )HERE

Third Step - Appoint Available From the NFCYM ($7.00) Develop a template for education and formation for youth ministry training programs and to write role descriptions, policies, or other procedures for parish youth ministries in a diocese Determine the ministry staffing needs in the parish to recruit, develop and evaluate staff Plan one’s professional development Manage volunteers, which includes identifying needs, recruiting, orienting, training, and assessment.

Fourth Step – Train Them There are many options for training, including: Diocesan Certification Programs Diocesan/regional training programs Parish-level youth ministry training On-line training and video training Books and articles On-the-job training for specific jobs Group evaluation and feedback

Fourth Step – Train Them Hold an Orientation Might be Specific to role Periodic updates ( , FB, texts, meetings) Retreats and faith formation -faith sharing and prayer -community building and socializing -sharing stories about our experiences with youth

5 th /6 th - Coach/ Direct/ Evaluate What are they doing well What needs improvement Specific and direct Consequences including termination See

Seventh Step - Recognize Create a culture of appreciation Straight from the youth From the parish, in the bulletin, from the Pastor Dinners Certificates Official types of recognition like: NFCYM Awards given out in Archdiocese

Eighth Step – Reengage Don’t assume they want to do the exact same job every year Consult with them Give them opportunities to try on new roles Give them a chance to rest or bow out Resource: r-communications /

The Cycle! The Continual Volunteer Ministry Leaders Circle

Final Thoughts Some Office / Center Promo Time A video to wrap us up
