Presbyopic Lasik surgery coming to Taiwan 新聞二 徐培倫

People with problems related to Prebyopia Many older people have no problem reading the headlines of a newspaper while having difficulty reading the articles. “It’s tough at home. Like when I watch TV, I have to wear different glasses. Each strength has a different purpose.”

Current corrections To correct vision, people can rely on glasses, contact lenses or presbyopic lenses.

Presbyopic Lasik surgery A new kind of surgery aimed at older people with poor vision. Aimed at curing people of farsightedness due to aging.

How do the surgery work? The surgery involves cutting part of the cornea to make it more convex. Presbyopic Lasik surgery doesn’t directly touch the eye and the risks are low, but it’s not able to fix the eyes for good.

Why is it not to work for good? We keep changing as we age. You might get the surgery at 40, but your condition at 40 and 50 will be different. So you may need to have it done every three to four years.

It not yet available in Taiwan. Surgery for presbyopia costs about NT$200,000 for both eyes. The Health Department also warns people to be careful since it hasn’t approved Lasik surgery for patients with presbyopia.
