Mr. Ramos The Nervous System

Before We Get Started… Levels of Organization

Introduction to the Nervous System The nervous system is an organ system that allows an organism to react to its environment. The neuron, or nerve cell, is the basic unit of structure and function of the nervous system. Neurons transmit and receive electrochemical impulses.

Divisions of the Nervous System The nervous system is divided in two parts Central Nervous System Brain and Spinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System Nerves

The Brain The brain is the main organ of the central nervous system. The brain is divided into three regions: Cerebrum, Cerebellum, & Brain Stem The Cerebrum controls functions involving thinking, emotions, seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smell. The cerebellum controls motor movements and posture. The brain stem is vital for survival. It regulates breathing and heart rate.

The Lobes of the Brain Frontal Love = Thinking Pariental Lobes = Sensing Temporal Lobes = Hearing Occipital Lobe = Seeing

Brainstem: Pons and Medulla Oblongata Pons = Sleep & dreams Medulla Oblongata = Heart rate and respiration The brainstem is vital to survival because it controls involuntary responses. These are things that happen automatically, such as breathing.
