Meet the Teacher - Year 1 September 18 th 2014

Who are the teachers in Year 1? Columbus Class Mrs Wardrope Class Teacher Mrs Davies HLTA Mrs Burran Teaching Assistant

Who are the teachers in Year 1? Armstrong Class Mrs Stewart Class Teacher Mrs Davies HLTA Mrs Bowman Class Teacher from Jan Mrs Harris Teaching Assistant

How does Year 1 differ from Reception? Part of the National Curriculum, not EYFS Children taught in discreet subject areas - English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, RS, PSHE, Computing, Art, DT, PE, Music, French Children assessed against year group expectations, not developmental ages and stages e.g. 1c, 1b, 1a, 2c. Formal phonics test at the end of the year. More emphasis on whole class teaching sessions and children working independently Behaviour expectations increase Less play and time outside, set play times instead More emphasis on topics

How does Year 1 differ from Reception? However… We still make learning fun! We have a long transition period to ease children in gently Learning still has a creative, hands-on feel, with lots of visual support, use of ICT and doing rather than just listening Children still do learn outside Links are still made between subject areas through the use of topics Children are still thoroughly supported through whole class, adult led groups and 1:1 learning sessions Children still have opportunities to follow their own interests through topics

Changes in routine? What has changed? Morning procedure – children now dropped at front gate, parents do not see them directly into their classroom 15 min play time in the morning and afternoon All children now get a free school dinner! More clubs now available to children Spelling test Children take letters out of their own bags House points and traffic light – not happy and sad face or merit cards What has stayed the same? Lunchtimes PE Home times Working together idea and learning log

What are the expectations at the end of Year 1? PSHE – more independent, better problem solvers, more able to compromise and take on board other peoples feelings, more able to solve disagreements, more able to talk about feelings. Writing – using joined up handwriting, smaller, neater letters on the line, using full sentences with more punctuation, writing more, using more descriptive language. Reading – fluency should improve, deeper understanding about what they are reading, reading for pleasure. Maths – accurate recording of all numerals, know numbers up to 100, count in 2s, 5s, 10s, firm understanding of doubling, halving, know number bonds to 10, able to read and write number sentences, understand simple time (o’clock), use a ruler to measure, better understanding and use of maths language.

How can you help your child at home? Talk to them about their day Continue to read with your child every day – read to them and let them read to you. Talk about what they have read – ask lots of questions, specific and general Help them to learn their spellings ‘look, cover, write, check’ method Work together to complete their Working Together Idea Encourage time on Mathletics Keep them healthy – early bed times, limit TV, healthy food, exercise

How can you help us? Label all clothing Read all letters, check book bag daily, use website Ensure they have a named water bottle in school Talk to us at the end of the day or via /phone if there is a problem Spend time on learning at home Reinforce school rules and sanctions/rewards at home
