1.What environmental problems can IT solve? A survey conducted indicated the following answers Waste Treatment84% Beach and river pollution 75% Chemical poisoning of land 74% Air pollution73% Ozone depletion69% Soil quality57% Nuclear threat46% Car accidents46% Unemployment32% Famine26% Population problems24% Homelessness18% Street violence13%

2.The impact of IT on the environment The manufacture of computers and IT equipment effects the environment There are thousands of materials and chemicals used in equipment that are toxic to both humans and the environment The average life of a computer is 4 years. What happens to the discarded computer? Are we responsible for the waste or do we ship it overseas

Class Task 1. Identify a problem associated with the disposal of old computers 2. Find companies on the internet that provide recycling of laser toner cartridges. How many times can a cartridge be recycled 3. Select an IT device and describe ways in which a company manufacturing this could take responsibility for the device after it is obsolete (eg Hard Disk Drive, LAN Cable, motherboard)
