Presentation on theme: "Design in a Global Context - ISSUES"— Presentation transcript:

1 Design in a Global Context - ISSUES
Technical – Can it be done… how? Economic – Is there a market, how much will people pay? Aesthetic – Does it look appealing and in keeping with related products and expectations? Social – Needs, demand, obsolescence, positive/negative effects on it’s users and surroundings. Environmental – Raw materials, manufacturing processes, waste (reduce), packaging, issues during use, disposal (re-use, recover, recycle) Moral – Responsibilities of Economically More Developed Countries (E.M.D.C.s.), Sustainable development, globalisation, pollution, deforestation

2 Social Issues Built in obsolescence:
Products designed to have limited life span. Technological: The technology moves on and older technologies become obsolete. E.g. Computers, steam engines, am radio Postponed: New products are deliberately delayed to enable companies to make profit on current products and manipulate markets. E.g. Mobile phones, cars Physical: Products which have a natural lifespan, products that run out e.g. print cartridges, car batteries, light bulbs Style: Modern trends and fashions move on making older styles obsolete. E.g. clothing, furniture

3 Moral issues in design are often at odds with economic issues.
Social & Moral Issues The effect of design on society: Designs have the potential to have a positive effect on society. E.g. healthcare technology, communication, car safety features Designs can also have a negative effect on society and/or pose moral questions E.g. Military technology, bull bars Moral issues in design are often at odds with economic issues.

4 Moral and Economic Issues
Global Sustainable Development Design with consideration to the wider environmental and social issues that a product affects. Pollution: Use of materials/energy, emissions, Climate change Industrialisation: Widening economic gaps between EMDCs and ELDCs. Use of overseas labour – working conditions, pay. Use of resources: Deforestation, fossil fuels – plastics, Responsibility of EMDCs to allow ELDCs to develop while limiting their own consumption. EMDC’s products tend to be driven by what people want ELDC’s products tend to be driven by what people need.

5 Design in a Global Context
Design in a Global Context Invention Solves a problem? Impact on Society? Impact on the environment? Yes/No Good/Bad Good/Bad

6 Design Classics – Good or Bad?
Browning M1911 Automatic Pistol Fender Stratocaster Defibrilator London Underground Map Type 300 Bakelite Telephone Monopoly

7 Homework Task – Design that inspires YOU
Choose a Design which you love or which inspires you Bring it (or a photo of it) in on Tuesday Prepare a 2 slide PowerPoint about it to share with the rest of the group Be prepared to talk for 2 minutes (minimum about the product to explain why you chose the product and what makes it remarkable) Be sure to consider Design ISSUES and some analysis of the product for each Issue Technical, Economic, Aesthetic, Social, Environmental, Moral

8 Obsolescence Planned Obsolescence
A product is no longer working or useful. Obsolete Consumer demand leads to the production of new products Planned Obsolescence A Manufacturer deliberately minimises the ‘life’ of a product to maintain sales of future products – Planned obsolescence = Built in obsolescence
