Childhood and Adolescent Sexuality: Sex Ed. Chapter 8 May 30, 2014 Irene Daboin, M.A.

What is “Sex Ed”? Take a minute to write down what you think is the definition for this term.

What is “Sex Ed”? The process of acquiring information and forming attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexual identity, relationships, and intimacy.

What is “Sex Ed”? Developing important life skills: – Ability to communicate – Negotiation skills – Assertiveness – Asking for help / advice – Identifying personal attitudes and values – Differentiating between accurate and inaccurate information

“The Talk”

Types of Sex Ed Programs Comprehensive vs. Abstinence-Only – Comprehensive: Birth control Sexual orientation – Abstinence-only: Abstinence until marriage

Sex Ed in the state of GA GA state law requires sex ed Abstinence must be taught as the only completely effective protection against unplanned pregnancy, STDs and HIV/AIDS Teaching about contraceptives is not required

Myth or Fact? 1.Abstinence-only education reduces teen pregnancy. 2.Comprehensive education delays sexual initiation and reduces number of sexual partners. 3.Abstinence-only programs reflect the values of the American majority. 4.Contraception is unreliable and ineffective. 5.There is no federal funding available for comprehensive sex ed programs.
