Photosynthesis.
KEY CONCEPT The overall process of photosynthesis produces sugars (glucose) that store chemical energy.
Photosynthesis. -Primarily in chloroplasts of plants -Reactions occur inside structures within the chloroplasts called thylakoids and the stroma.

 In the chloroplast

 Carbon dioxide  Water

 Oxygen  Glucose

Light reactions Dark reactions Take place in: Thylakoid membrane Produces: 2 ATP, NADPH, O 2 Takes place in: Stroma Produces: Glucose, ADP, NAPH +

Requires:  Light Uses:  Water (H 2 O) Produces:  ATP, NADPH, Oxygen

Animation  Light reaction Light reaction  Light reaction 2 Light reaction 2  Light reaction explained Light reaction explained

Uses: CO 2 ATP NADPH Produces: Sugars (GLUCOSE) ADP NADP +

◦ Plants use the energy from ATP and NADPH to build high energy SUGARS (GLUCOSE) that can store energy for longer than a few minutes.

 The carbon and oxygen needed to build the sugars come from CO 2 in the atmosphere.

 The Calvin cycle uses CO 2, ATP and NADPH  and creates Sugar, ADP and NADP+
