Presentation on theme: "Two Stages of Photosynthesis:"— Presentation transcript:

1 Two Stages of Photosynthesis:
1) the LIGHT REACTIONS 2) the CALVIN CYCLE (a.k.a. the light-independent reactions)

2 LIGHT DEPENDENT REACTIONS:
• convert solar energy  chemical energy • light is absorbed by chlorophyll and drives a transfer of electrons and H from water to an acceptor called: NADP+ • water is split and O2 is produced as a waste product • NADP+ is reduced to NADPH…ALSO, ATP is generated via phosphorylation of ADP

3

4 LIGHT INDEPENDENT REACTIONS (Calvin Cycle):
• CO2 from air is incorporated into organic molecules by carbon fixation • NADPH and ATP from the light reactions power the production of sugar

5 Locations of the Photosynthesis Reactions:
• Light dependent reactions occur in the THYLAKOIDS • Light independent reactions occurs in the STROMA

6 Where is chlorophyll located?
Stroma Granum Grana Thylakoid membrane

7 The oxygen that a plant releases comes from what reactant?
Carbon dioxide Water Glucose Sunlight

8 The energy that is stored in glucose originally came from _____.
ATP & NADPH Pyruvate Wavelengths of light ATP, NADPH, & Wavelengths of light

9 The ATP that is needed in the Light Independent Reactions needs to be produced where?
Thylakoid membrane Stroma Granum Stomata
