Welcome! Remember textbook, notebook, and paper! Bellwork: Medical researchers tested a new nasal spray on people with several types of allergy symptoms last April. They gave half of the participants the new allergy spray, and the other half received a spray made of salt water. Each participant was asked to use the spray at home every day for two weeks and record his or her symptoms. What was kept the same for all participants in this experiment? Answer and Explain your reasoning. Tuesday 2/19

Daily Objectives: I Can… Identify and Compare the six types of simple machines Determine the amount of force needed to do work using different simple machines.

Vocabulary: Please define in your own words Simple Machines Pivot Fulcrum Force Input Force Output Force Mechanical Advantage Work Power

Notes: Work EquationPower Equation W= F x DP= W/T Finding Mechanical Advantage MA = F out / F in

Identify the Simple Machines

Practice: Jason has a 50 pound box and a rope that is 100 feet long. He needs to move the box from the floor of a barn 20 feet up to its loft. What simple machine would allow him to move the box up to the loft by pulling down on the rope? A. inclined plane B. lever and fulcrum C. fixed pulley D. electric motor

Practice: What type of simple machine would be most effective for removing a nail from a piece of wood? Which simple machines requires a fulcrum to work properly?

Practice: A 60-pound rock rests on one end of an iron lever that is 1 foot from the fulcrum. The other end of the lever is 3 feet from the fulcrum. The mechanical advantage provided by the lever in this situation is 3. What is the least amount of force that would lift the rock when applied to the other end of the lever? A. 6 pounds B. 20 pounds C. 60 pounds D. 180 pounds

Welcome ! Remember Textbook, Notebook, Paper! Bellwork: Jeana walked up a ramp that is 12 feet long and 4 feet high at the end. What is the mechanical advantage of the ramp? (Think distance over height) Write the formula and Solve! Wednesday 2/20

Bellwork 2: Taylor has a 50-pound box she is moving straight up into a loft with a single fixed rope and pulley. The arrangement of her pulley changes the direction of her force, but does not provide a mechanical advantage that amplifies her force. What is the least amount of force she must pull down on the rope with to lift the box off of the floor? A pounds B. 25 pounds C. 50 pounds D. 100 pounds

Daily Objective: -Practice solving distance, time, speed, and velocity equations Vocabulary Define in your own words (Keep it short and simple) Speed Velocity

Notes: SPEED EQUALS DISTANCE DIVIDED BY TIME S = D / T

Practice 1: Jessica traveled in an airplane. The plane flew 825 miles at an average speed of 550 miles per hour. About how much time did this take?

Practice 2: Kyle traveled in an small single engine train. The train traveled 120 miles at an average speed of 40 miles per hour. About how much time did this take?

Practice 3: If a car is moving at a speed of 40 miles per hour, what distance will it cover in 30 minutes?

Practice 4: If a runner is moving at a speed of 8 miles per hour, what distance will he cover in 20 minutes?

Practice 5: If a biker is moving at a speed of 14 miles per hour, what distance will he cover in 180 minutes?

Practice 6: Jamal drove for 3.5 hours at a constant speed. He traveled 190 miles. S = D / T What was Jamal's approximate speed?

Classwork- Turn in before you leave 1. S= 35 miles per hour D= 70 miles T= ? 2. S = ? D= 500 miles T= 2 hours 3. Ramp is 10 meters high and 50 meters long. MA? 4. P= ? W= 2000 j T= 5 sec 5. MA=? F out = 125 N F in = 25 N 6. W= ? F = 100 N D = 40 meters 7. P = 25 watts W = ? T = 10 sec 8. S = 222 mph D = ? T = 10 hours 9. S = 15 mph D = ? T = 30 mins 10. MA = ? F out = 450 N F in = 75 N 11. W = 300 N F = ? D = 20 meters 12. Wedge is 70 inches long, and 50 inches wide. MA?

Welcome! Remember textbook, notebook, and paper! Bellwork: Monica filled a balloon with helium, and it floated to the ceiling of her room. Three days later, the balloon rested on her floor. When Monica asked her science teacher to explain why this happened, he said that most of the helium had moved out of the balloon and had been replaced by molecules of gases in the air moving into the balloon. Which process caused the exchange of helium with the other gases? A. Homeostasis B. respiration C. simple diffusion D. chemical reaction Friday 2/22

Daily Objective: I can… Describe and Draw how an object moves using Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion Vocabulary: Please define in own words, Short and Simple Motion Force Mass Acceleration

Notes: 1 st Law of Motion Object at rest stays at rest, Object in motion stays in motion 2 nd Law of Motion Force = Mass x Acceleration 3 rd Law of Motion Every action has an equal and opposite reaction

Practice 1: A model rocket engine produces hot exhaust gases that flow out of the base of the rocket. According to Newton's third law of motion, how should this affect the movement of the rocket?

Practice 2: Newton's Second Law states that the amount of force it takes to change the speed or direction of a moving object depends upon the net force acting upon the object and the mass of the object. Which of the following is an example of Newton's Second Law? A. It takes more force to get a heavy car moving than to get a light car moving. B. If you put a tennis ball in a tub of water, it will float to the surface because of gravity. C. Objects that are heavy have greater volume than objects that are light. D. The rate at which a moving object speeds up is the same rate at which the object will slow down

Practice 3: Newton's third law of motion states: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Which of the following is an example of the application of this law? A. Strong tree branches hold a bird's nest high above the ground. B. Birds must flap their wings forcefully when they fly against the wind. C. Lightweight bones minimize the gravitational attraction between the birds and Earth. D. Birds can save energy by using the force of gravity to descend.

Motion Activity with a partner Draw or Write a short scene where you are demonstrating one of Newton’s Laws of Motion. -The paper turned in must include either a drawing or a short description of scene, and which Law of Motion that is used. Ex. Newton’s 1 st Law If I throw a baseball in space, it will continue to travel without any forces acting on it.
