1 WORKSHOP AGEING WELL INTEGRATING HEALTHY AGING AND CHRONICITY Dr Ignasi Sáez Geriatrician Department of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care Badalona Serveis Assistencials Barcelona, 17th January 2013

The voice of the end users of HSH: Elderly and carers views about the Home Sweet Home Project  Difficulties  Benefits  Further improvements

difficulties  Accepting use of something new I am all right as I am now I don’t need any machine to keep on with my life I am afraid of using the, in case I break them down  Accepting use and confident to technology Anyway, I know that this will never work properly Uau…darling! This is too much complicated!

difficulties  Changing their home environment Do you mean that so many wires… …and this blinking light will not be too power consuming?  Changing their free daily schedule …and it will be necessary to take my blood pressure every day. I have never done that!

difficulties  Cognitive and functional abilities to perform Use of control remote with several steps –In which channel did you said that my daughter appeared on TV? Turn back to Home page before measurement –(for the third time) Oh, I see, so I need to press here each time I want to take my blood pressure? Put arm blood pressure monitor –I tried several times but the blood pressure results where inappropriate. I decided to take my own wrist blood pressure monitor.

difficulties  Cognitive and functional abilities to perform Switch off Smoke alarm –It was horrible, I could only leave this loud noise until my son could come and switched it off  Outdoor mobility for Mambo usage I am not really using this telephone because I don’t go out usually, and in case I I always go with someone else.

benefits  Clinical team visits: increased personal contact I thank you for coming home frecuently, my GP is not able to do so as much as I would like…  Feeling secure at home: 24h contact …at least I know I can call any time pressing this red button. once I did not contact my daughter because it was too late at night. I did not know what to do… Now I can use this device

benefits  Confidence in health situation and progress I can monitor my lost of weight easier than I would do going to the pharmacy  Cognitive training opportunity in normal ageing I find it really interesting to be able to play with these funny games Oh, I can finally improve my memory. I keep on forgetting many things lately, you know…  Early contact in case of emergency They contacted me immediately although I was not feeling out of breath. They anyway suggested me to contact the Emergency number for a urgent assessment.

further improvements  Enthusiasm. Human value.  Frailty as target phenotype. Improving fine selection: which old person is more suitable to what services.  Design priority: listen to end user! Improve a system adaptable enough to each reality

Thanks for your attention!
