CEOS-GEO 2013 Actions

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October 2014 The CEOS-GEO Action Tracker is now empty for Open Actions Completely blank space

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October 2014 Climate Activities First meeting of the new joint CEOS-CGMS Working Group on Climate o Focused on the further development of the inventory of Climate Data Records EUMETSAT hosting of the Climate Symposium on Climate Research and Earth Observations from Space Promote Joint WGClimate and Climate Architecture Stimulate/facilitate participation of CEOS and CGMS members CEOS Priorities and Achievements supporting GEOSS Implementation

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October 2014 Carbon Activities Release of the CEOS Strategy for Carbon Observations from Space Currently assessing the possible implementation of this strategy with draft recommendations on the way forward CEOS Priorities and Achievements supporting GEOSS Implementation Disaster Activities Creation of the new Disasters Working Group (WGDisasters) Prepare CEOS contribution to Post Hyogo framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) (HFA-2) WGDisasters has already made rapid progress, with substantive preparations underway for CEOS contributions to the 3 rd World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction to be held in Sendai, Japan in March 2015

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October 2014 Space Data Coordination Group for Global Forest Observations Initiative CEOS Strategy for GFOI has 3 Elements, coordinated by SDCG: o Element 1: A baseline, coordinated global data acquisition strategy involving a number of ‘Core data streams’ that can be used free-of-charge and openly for GFOI purposes. This will involve global, systematic and sustained wall-to-wall acquisitions of forested areas o Element 2: Coordinated strategies for national data acquisitions including historical coverage characterization, impartial data needs assessment, and data delivery. o Element 3: Data supply in support of the GFOI R&D activities, including in support of: the science studies assisting the development and evolution of the Methods and Guidance document for GFOI 15 Approved Global Baseline Data Acquisition Strategy and Space Data Services Strategy 2014 CEOS Priorities and Achievements supporting GEOSS Implementation

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October Report on GEO task IN-01-C2 (CEOS lead)

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October 2014 IN-01 Task Objectives GEO Work Plan... 4 Components in IN-01 Task  IN-01-C1 = Surface Networks Tim Haigh, EEA  IN-01-C2 = Space-based Observing Systems Brian Killough, NASA, CEOS  IN-01-C3 = Coordination of Surface and Space- based Observing Systems Ruth Neilan, NASA, GGOS  IN-01-C4 = Radio-Frequency Protection Jose Arimatea de Sousa Brito, Brazil 17

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October 2014 IN-01-C2 Accomplishments  CEOS currently operates 109 missions!  10 new CEOS launches planned for 2014: (launched) Sentinel-1A (ESA/EC), GPM, OCO-2, SMAP (NASA), ALOS-2, Himawari-8 (JAXA/JMA), DMSP-F19 (NOAA), CBERS-4 (INPE/China), KOMPSAT-3A (KARI), Meteor-M N2 (Russia)  8 new CEOS launches planned for 2015 Sentinel-2A, Sentinel-3A (ESA/EC), Jason-3 (NASA), Meteosat- 11 (EUMETSAT), Ingenio (CDTI), SAOCOM-1A (CONAE), Meteor-M N2-1, Arctica-M N1 (Russia)  CBERS ground stations in South Africa and Spain ready CBERS-4 launch on December 7,  New CGMS-CEOS Working Group on Climate met in March Focus on Essential Climate Variable (ECV) Inventory ( developed by CEOS, CGMS, and WMO which includes 200+ data records. Future plans to expand this inventory to include in-situ data records. 18 Space Observations

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October 2014 AGEOS = Gabonese Agency for Space Studies and Observations Public company establishing ground stations in central Africa (23 countries, upper right) for CBERS, Landsat, SPOT and COSMO-SkyMed data. Antenna installation starting in Sept 2014 along with high speed fiber optic network (lower right). Processing support for forests, coastal management, water and urbanization. AGEOS Status (IN-01-C2)

28 th Plenary session Tromsø, Norway October 2014 IN-01 Comments  CEOS continues to meet its IN-01-C2 objectives and deliverables in the GEO Work Plan and is making excellent progress.  CEOS is currently operating 100+ satellites and is launching a large number of satellites in the future (10 in 2014, 8 in 2015) that will contribute a significant amount of new data to support global problems. 20  The IN-01 task has been graded as “YELLOW” in the past, due to issues with global expansion of in-situ data beyond Europe.  The CEOS-led IN-01-C2 component is helping this issue by expanding the ECV Inventory to include in-situ data in the future.
