A Long Time Ago on a Continent Far Away… Napoleonic Wars

First Coalition – Austrian Empire, Prussia, United Kingdom, Russia, Italian States, Spain, Portugal. Early victories for the allies – French victories in Belgium. Napoleon’s campaign in North Italy. Treaty of Campo Formio in October 1797 confirms the success of the French Revolution. Only UK remains at war.

Second Coalition – UK, Ottoman Empire, Austria, Russia (left in Oct. 1799), Naples and the Vatican. Egyptian Campaign of Napoleon – Battle of the Pyramids. French victory against Ottoman army. Battle of the Nile. French loss of fleet to Admiral H. Nelson. Napoleon returns to Europe – Coup d’Etat, Consulate and declares revolution over – Treaties of Luneville (Austria, Naples) and Amiens (UK). Concordat with the Vatican.

Second Coalition Continued…

Emperor Napoleon

Third Coalition UK, Russia, Prussia, Austria, Naples, Sweden. Battle of Trafalgar – Nelson dies, but wins. End of French/English competition at sea. Battle of Austerlitz – Great victory for Napoleon. Austria capitulates. Treaty of Pressburg end the coalition.

Fourth Coalition – Prussia, Saxony, Russia, UK, Sweden. Napoleon’s victory and Jena. Napoleon enters Berlin. Germany, Austria, Belgium and Holland are occupied. Brothers Joseph and Jerome become king of the Netherlands and Westphalia. UK begins the Continental Blockade. Peace with Russia at Tilsit – 1807.

Fifth Coalition – Intervention in Spain. Brother Joseph crowned King of Spain. UK, Spain, Austria Battle of Wagram. Austria lost. Peace treaty – Married Marie Louise of Austria – Son, Napoleon, King of Rome born.

Sixth Coalition – UK, Russia, Sweden, in 1813 also Austria and Prussia – Invasion of Russia. Battle of Borodino. Napoleon enters Moscow and is trapped in the Russian winter. Runs home – Fall of Paris. Exile to Elba. First Treaty of Paris. Restoration of the Bourbons – Louis XVIII king of France.

The 100 Days Napoleon escapes from Elba, raises an army and enters Paris with little resistance. Louis XVIII runs Battle of Waterloo. British/Prussian forces under the Duke of Wellington defeat Napoleon. Napoleon abdicates in favor of his son. Napoleon captured by the allies. Second Treaty of Paris. Restoration of the Bourbons. Napoleon exiled to St. Helena. Napoleon dies of cancer in 1821.
