AGE: 2000

A question on age has been asked since the first census of the population in 1790.

The Census 2000 Question on Age

In 2000 the median age of the population reached 35.3, the highest in our nation’s history.

Of the 5-year age groups, the 50-to-54 year age group experienced the largest percentage growth.

There were more older women than older men.

Median age in 2000 varied by race.

People who reported more than one race tended to be younger.

Median age was highest in the Northeast and lowest in the West.

The West had the highest growth rates in all three age groups: under 18, 18 to 64, and 65 and over.

West Virginia had the highest median age.

Florida had the highest proportion of people age 65 years and over in Alaska had the lowest.

Counties with low median ages were mostly in the southern and western portions of the country.

Provo, Utah, had the lowest median age, 22.9.

Clearwater, FL, at 41.8, had the highest median age among places of 100,000 or more population in 2000.
