eduroam - What? eduroam service provides easy, secure, and free Internet access for roaming educational users (= community-wide Wi-Fi service) Users’ credentials are verified by their own home site (= federated Wi-Fi) “Open your laptop and be online”

eduroam - How? eduroam broadens a site’s Wi-Fi service to a larger user base (for Internet access) Globally unique id’s/usernames (e.g. eduroam provides federated authentication, nothing more eduroam infrastructure links participating sites via a hierarchy of Radius servers

Benefits for the roaming user (& IdP): – Simple (known credentials; configure device once) – Secure (credentials protected; strong wireless encryption) – Widespread WiFi access, for free! – Access to eduroam CAT (mobile device configuration tool – Benefits for the visited site (SP): – Reduced overheads (easy to accommodate eduroam visitors) – Protection (users can be held accountable)

Some Usage Stats for Ireland For 2013: – Over 122,000 mobile devices seen – Over 4.5 million authentications – 38% were non-Irish users roaming to Ireland For 2014, to date: – Over 226,000 mobile devices seen – Over 10 million authentications – 34% were non-Irish users roaming to Ireland – 70 eduroam hotspots countrywide
