Authors Explain things to readers by: Telling them How- To do something.

Example of Explain Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is really easy. First, gather your ingredients (bread, peanut butter, jelly) and two knives. Spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread with one knife, and your jelly on the other piece of bread with the other knife. Put the bread together and enjoy!

Authors Persuade readers by: Trying to change their opinions.

Persuade Example Art class should be longer than all other specials. There never seems to be enough time to get our pictures done. If we had more time in art class everyone would do a better job on their pictures and we would learn more. Art is very important and we should have the time we need to finish a project.

Authors Inform readers by: giving them facts about a topic.

Inform Example A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions occur. Gases and rock shoot up through the opening and spill over or fill the air with lava fragments. Eruptions can cause lateral blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows, mudslides, avalanches, falling ash and floods.

The kids just loved volcanos so much, I figured I’d throw in a couple awesome pictures amidst the reading.

Entertain Example Once upon a time there was a little boy who loved to play soccer. He would run as fast as he could to the ball, but every time he got there and tried to kick it he would miss.
