Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research Polar Information Commons Roles for SCADM/SCAGI

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research

PIC vs SCAR DIM Strategy The SCAR DIMS seeks to create an Antarctic Information Commons. By joining forces with the Arctic community we can help create the PIC. The PIC has a Steering Committee and SCADM CO is part of the team. If I follow the SCAR DIM Strategy am I part of PIC ?

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research PIC Goals Get as much data as we can openly accessible with either a Creative Commons (CC) 0 Waiver (i.e. waive your copyright) or a CC Attribution (i.e. doesnt waive copyright) License. Make the PIC brand (or badge) stand for a certain set of norms that community adheres to. Deposit data in PIC with minimal metadata or put data directly into an authorised PIC Data Centre. Encourage scientists and data miners to exploit the data in PIC.

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research What Can We Do ? 1.Brand our metadata and data as belonging to the PIC. How ? –Insert some standard code into the usage constraints field of the AMD metadata in DocBuilder. To the extent possible under law, Kim Finney has waived all copyright and related or neighbouring rights to this sample dataset. This work is published from the Australian Antarctic Division (Commonwealth of Australia).

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research Polar Information Commons Norms This work is submitted to the Polar Information Commons under the assumption of the following norms: 1.In using these works you will agree to cite the source of the work in any publications which use these works, 2.Acknowledging the utility of being able to draw on works in these commons you will endeavour to contribute your own works to the PIC for the benefit of others. 3.The works being shared are described as accurately as possible, including estimations of uncertainty to enable re-use by future generations. 4.These works are submitted assuming that they will be preserved for future use.

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research

2.Contribute to development of the PIC norms. How ? –Comment today on the norms – have your say. –Visit the PIC wiki at and participate in discussions. 3. Help develop the PIC Sandbox 4.Work with the PIC Steering Committee to nominate your NADC as a PIC repository and help develop the PIC Data Centre network. What Can We Do ?

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research PIC Sandbox A place where developers and data exploiters can build tools over the PIC data. What Can We Do ? Examples Tools to tag (and classify) data to optimise search and discovery, Tools to visualise relationships between data in the PIC, Tools to push data to registered PIC data users, Tools to marry personal scientists profiles with their datasets, Tools to exploit certain data types or data formats

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research Group Discussions What do you think of the PIC concept ? Do you think it is feasible to contribute to PIC – any obvious barriers ? PIC Norms – comments/views ? How can we dovetail our SCAR DIM Strategy activities with developing the PIC.
