BIOENGINEER ANALYSIS WATER

GOALS Students learn how to collect water samples. Then, they will aseptically collect a water sample and use a microscope to look for fresh water organisms. Students will perform chemical testing of their water samples and make and filter systems. Extension: culturing and identification of bacteria in water samples.

WATER POLLUTION Water pollution is a major worldwide health problem. According to the World Health Organization more than 9 million deaths annually are attributed to waterborne diseases. One billion people do not have clean water. Video Water changes everything

WATER CONTAMINATION It is impossible to keep water 100% sterile or transported through streams or pipes. Water is going to come into contact with metals, organisms, chemicals ant other contaminants. We should keep water contamination at a minimum by keeping streams, pipes and reservoirs clean and separated from waste water, chemicals, sewage, dirt and other contaminants.

OBJECTIVES Students will learn how to collect water samples for quality testing Students will analyze water samples for common chemical contaminants Students will use a microscope and identify organisms in water samples Students will make a filtration system and remove contaminants from your water samples.
