1965: Berkley and MIT linked computers over a dialup connection…1 st Wide Area Network (WAN) : ARPANET, MIT, RAND, and Natl. Physics Lab UK came together into an idea that would connect several agencies 1969: the first “login” happened…ARPANET was real and connected 4 computers

1971: 23 computers were connected 1972: went public with 40 computers connected and 1974: TCPIP (Transmission control protocol/internet protocol) became the common language…several networks joined under this protocol. 1974: 1 st commercial version “Telenet” at Stanford

1982: ARPANET adopted TCPIP and the Internet was born ARPANET outgrew itself and died in Commercial networks had emerged and a backbone funded by gov. was inplace (NSFNet) 1990: 1 st Search Engine (ARCHIE) from McGill University in Montreal 1991: Private access permitted on NSFNet

1991: The World Wide Web (WWW) was released to the public (network of sites that can be searched and retrieved using HTTP..hypertext transfer protocol) : Al Gore’s High Performance Computing Act provided funds for research and improving the Internet structure Browsers were developed to facilitate navigation. 1992: Only 50 websites existed. 1993: Only 150 websites existed. 1993: Mosaic X launched popularity of the Web HTML (hypertext markup language)
