3 Huda AL-Omairl - Network93 Internet History The Internet was originally established to meet the research needs of the U.S. defense industry ( ARPANET), but it has grown to develop (NSFNET) for those colleges that did not have access to ARPANET. In 1990 most networks were leaving the slower ARPANET and linking to NSFNET, which was then called the Internet. Internet now is a huge global network serving universities, academic researchers, commercial interests, and government agencies over the world

4 Huda AL-Omairl - Network94 Internet Information The complete volume of information available through the Internet is amazing. however, because the Internet is a casual grouping of many networks, there is often no easy way to determine the location of specific information. This has led to the emergence of several portal sites and a number of popular search engines.

5 Huda AL-Omairl - Network95 Who controls the Internet? No government agency, single person, or corporate entity controls the Internet. All decisions on methods and standards are made by committees based on input from users.

Over %80 t of the people who use the Internet regularly use it for e-mail. You can send e-mail to recipients in more than 150 countries. 3.Mailing lists Private discussion groups accessed by e- mail.

8 Huda AL-Omairl - Network98 1- World Wide Web (WWW) WWW is part of the internet. It is basically websites that contains pages including hypertext,and multimedia. It based on HTPP protocol Web address starts with http Web address = URL ( Uniform Resource Locator) You can view information within a website by accessing its pages, all pages are linked together. Pages are coded by a special language called HTML You need a browser to view WebPages. ex. Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Browsers have “Favorite menu “ to save all the URLs needed You may need to install addition plug ins to show some special data like Java, Active-X, Examples of browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator

It has many advantages : –Very simple to use –High Speed –Free of charge –Suitable for all times ( Receiving computer will group the messages together until the person open them ) –File transfer (attachment) Email address consist of Person@domain.comPerson@domain.com Person : the user account Domain: is the company providing the service. Com: is the type of company ( edu, net, org, gov, mil, sa) You can use web browser to send emails OR you can use special mail programs like : Microsoft outlook Express, Eudora

Can be sorted according to topics. Managed in two ways : –Automatically by a program like Listserv http://www.lsoft.com/products/listserv.asp –Managed by a person like Yahoo group

Most newsgroups are concerned with a single subject, and the range of subjects throughout Usenet is simply phenomenal; if people are interested in a topic, you will find a newsgroup for that topic.
