Access to grocery stores EFGS Johan Stålnacke, Statistics Sweden

Agenda Background Data sources Method Results Conclusion

Statistics Sweden has calculated indicators for the populations access to grocery stores 2001 and 2006, using the national road network outside localities and bird distance inside. Four distances were used: 300m, 600m (inside localities) 1500m, 10000m (outside localities) Background

Data sources Grocery stores databases, 2001, 2006 Population on real estate level, 2001, 2006 (approx. 2 million real estates) Swedish national road network, 2006

Method Connecting population on real estate level with grocery stores through the national road database. Sweden was divided into 22 partially overlapping regions to lessen the computer time. Software ArcInfo Mapinfo/Routefinder

Results The number of grocery stores: 2001, , ,3 % grocery stores decreace -2% access decreace

2006 – 2001 comparison Changed access to grocery store

Conclusions It’s possible to do national analysis with large data amounts. The method is applicable to other data sources.
