Outline of Deuteronomy History of the Covenant (1:1 – 4:43) Stipulations of the Covenant (4:44 – 26:19) – Moral Law (4:44 – 11:32) – Ceremonial Law (12:1 – 16:17) – Civil Law (16:18 – 26:19) Ratification of the Covenant (27:1 – 30:20) Leadership Succession Under the Covenant (31:1 – 34:20)

Joshua to Succeed Moses (ch. 31)

God Speaks to Moses You are about to DIE (31:16) Your people will WHORE after foreign gods when they enter into the promise land They will FORSAKE me and BREAK my covenant even though I promised to never FORSAKE them or BREAK my covenant with them. (31:16)

God Speaks to Moses God makes a promise… (31:17-18) – my anger will be high – I will forsake them – I will hide my FACE from them – They will be devoured – Many troubles and evils will come upon them – WHY? IDOLATRY

Final Acts of Moses Moses is instructed to write a SONG Serve as a WITNEESS for God towards Israel when everything falls apart for them. (31:19) Serve as words of COMFORT (31:22) Moses finishes writing this BOOK of LAW and has it placed in the ARK of the Covenant. Assembles all of Israel to HEAR his song

The Rock The LORD is my “rock” and SALVATION It is a place of REFUGE and hiding A continual theme throughout the scriptures

JESHURUN (32:15) This is the name for ISRAEL that comes from the Hebrew word meaning “STRAIGHT” or “RIGHT”. In verse 4 it is used to describe “GOD” It is the name applied to ISRAEL here, to describe how the chosen nation was supposed to LIVE, but instead they are now “crooked” and “fat”

TWO-FOLD PURPOSE (v 17 – 43) Moses’ Song has TWO purposes: – To prophesy Israel’s apostasy – To serve as a witness against them. The two TITLES “Jeshurun” and “Rock” establish a pattern for the remainder for the song Jeshurun/Israel – turned from God, committed Idolatry, engaged in abominable acts, and forgot God.

TWO-FOLD PURPOSE (v 17 – 43) The “rock” = God was stirred to – JEALOUSY – Provoked to Anger – Would hide his FACE – Would stir them to jealousy by employing foreign nations to turn them back to God.

YOU FORGOT GOD (32:18) Forgetting and remembering are key ingredients to the covenantal relationship that God has with humanity. When we forget God, we stand in danger of God forgetting us and of being cut off forever. Sinful human beings, like rebellious Israel, will forget God. God’s grace is the controlling principle for the covenant and for remembrance; we are enabled to remember God’s promises because He does not forget us.

REVERSES the blessing of Aaron given to us by Aaron in Numbers 6:24 – 26.

A Jealous God (32:21) They have made me jealous with what is NO GOD; they have provoked me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are no people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

God Will Remember (32: ) The Lord will VINDICATE and have COMPASSION on his people (v. 36) He will show them how USELESS their “gods” are (v. 37 – 38) “There is no God beside me!” (v. 39 – 41) – I kill and I make alive – I wound and heal – I will take vengeance and will repay

Moses and Joshua Recite Together

Joint Recitation (32:44) Moses and Joshua come together to recite “all the words” in the hearing of the people. Joint recitation of the song validated the transfer of authority from Moses to Joshua and validated the message of the song The one true God ordained Joshua and inspired the words of the song.

Moses Death is Foretold on Mt. Nebo (32:48 – 52)

For you shall see the land before you, but you shall not go there, into the land that I am giving to the people of Israel. (32:52)

Moses’ Final Blessing on Israel Moses’ blessing takes the hearers back to the moment when God gave them the Law at Sinai Moses blesses the tribes of ISRAEL Moses blessing on the tribes hints at their inheritance of LAND and the manner in which they would use or perhaps MISUSE their inheritance.

Moses’ Final Blessing on Israel Although Moses did not mention the tribe of Simeon by name, Simeon was not excluded from the inheritance of land in Numbers 26. Joshua 19:1-9 explains how the tribe of Simeon received land in the territory of Judah. Judges 1:1-20 records how Simeon joined with Judah to fight their adversaries.

Moses’ Final Blessing on Israel Reuben (33:6) Judah (33:7) Levi (33:8 -11) Benjamin (33:12) Joseph (33:13 – 17) Zebulun (33:18 -19) Gad (33:20 – 21) Dan (33:22) Naphtali (33:23) Asher (33:24)

Benjamin’s Blessing

Asher’s Blessing

Death of Moses (chapter 34) Moses is granted a onetime, unlimited view of the land Moses will die in the land of Moab and be buried in the valley opposite Beth-peor. Moses was 120 years old but his eyes were undimmed and his vigor unabated. The people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for 30 days. Moses was unlike any prophet for he has seen God face to face.
