PUMA & MetaPub Open Access to Italian CNR Repositories in the Perspective of the European Digital Repository Infrastructure GL9 - NINTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GREY LITERATURE Antwerp - Belgium Dec 2007 Stefania Biagioni ISTI-CNR PISA

DRIVER PUMA & METAPUB DRIVER: Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research PUMA Publication Management System METAPUB & OAI

DRIVER Digital Repository Infrastructure Vision for European Research EU-funded project which is building a test-bed for a future knowledge infrastructure of the European Research Area. DRIVER responds to the vision that any form of scientific-content resources should be freely accessible through simple Internet-based infrastructures, thus responding to the Open Archive Initiative.

DRIVER PARTNERS The original partnership of 10 EU partners: Univ.of Athens(GR) Univ. of Bielefeld (GE) CNR-ISTI (IT) STICHTING SURF (NL) Univ. of Nottingham (UK) CNRS-CCSD (FR) Univ. of Bath (UK) Univ. of Warszawski (PO) Univ. of Gent (BE) Univ. of Gottingen (GE)

DRIVER I and II (7thFP) The initial phase of DRIVER focused on the support of institutional repositories and textual content in repositories. DRIVER II follows on from this and will focus on the development and enhancement of services for specific communities. The technical focus will expand to also include the management of complex objects such as data and multimedia.

DRIVER OBJECTIVES To develop a test-bed for integrating existing national, regional and thematic repositories in order to create a production-quality European Repository Infrastructure. This infrastructure will make accessible worldwide, through an initial set of advanced services, these repositories virtually organised and structured according to the needs of different user communities; To identify and promote the use of a relevant set of standards; To prepare the future expansion and upgrade of a Digital Repository Infrastructure across Europe and to ensure widest possible user involvement.

PUMA DRIVER The Publication Management System (PUMA) is the first step towards creating an Italian network of CNR Institutional repositories, looking at the DRIVER vision

PUMA is a software infrastructure, user focused and service oriented, developed by the Institute of Information Science and Technologies (ISTI-CNR). It presently manages 22 CNR institutional repositories that contain about 5200 documents covering different disciplines. Repositories and collections are growing daily

PUMA DOCUMENTS

PUMA FUNCTIONALITIES The system functionalities are oriented to meet the requirements of CNR researchers by facilitating their self-archiving, helping them to associate access right to the full text, ensuring the preservation of their documents, providing world wide easy web access to their papers, permitting them to manipulate the stored content to fulfill scientific and administrative issues.

It offers a common user interface, both in English and in Italian to self-archive and publish search, browse, download, (when it is permitted), It allows users to search single or all repositories contemporary. PUMA FUNCTIONALITIES

PUMA supports administrators and librarians and/or reviewers in performing technical, documentary and quality control before documents are included into the repository. The access to the various administration services is controlled, at the different levels, by LDAP server or IP address and by user name and password.

METAPUB FUNCTIONALITIES Special functions are provided by the additional software module MetaPub that uses repository content to deliver different bibliographic and administrative services. MetaPub also opens PUMA repositories to the OAI world by implementing the OAI-PMH protocol.
