Where we’ve been…. Year in Review Student Development has many new faces this year, a new VP of Student Development, Director of Enrollment Management, Registrar, Assistant Director of Student Activities/Basketball Coach, Database Technician, North Campus Counselor and Admissions/Records Technician. Counseling staff successfully implemented a new electronic database reporting system for ten Allied Health programs. This system is used for recording specific criteria in the selection of each freshman class. Activities/Athletics proposed and received approval to begin Women’s Soccer in Spring Men’s soccer will become an NJCAA sport in the Fall All units of Student Development are available to students at the North Campus on Monday mornings throughout the semester.

Where we’re going …

To provide students with information regarding careers, career searches, decision making and job employment preparedness. MISSION

Planning Priority #1 Introduce the internet based ACCUPLACER Placement Test on a trial basis as part of testing services at CFCC Why the Need? To implement a placement test that places students more accurately and is cost effective and time efficient. Procedure: * Establish new database in conjunction with ACCUPLACER support staff and create parameters to begin testing. * Establish a student pilot group to test in ACCUPLACER and ASSET. * Submit pilot group results for further analysis to English and Math departments. College Goal: #3, 5, and 7

Planning Priority #2 To offer more career resources for CFCC students who are interested in learning more about potential careers, employment outlooks, salaries, etc. Why the need? To educate CFCC students on the numerous career options available to them, and to provide valuable information assisting them in their career decision-making process. Procedure: * Provide more detail on career services, career exploration and potential career salary information. * Research materials and resources that would be beneficial in assisting students with their career selection. * Prepare cost estimates of materials. College Goal: #7 and 12

To offer services to students regarding academic programs and requirements; to intervene and make referrals in an effort to retain students; and to assist in removing barriers that prevent student success. MISSION

Planning Priority #1 Identify Home School Associations in New Hanover and Pender County to provide information on Dual Enrollment options available through CFCC. Why the need? With the increasing number of home schooled students enrolling at CFCC, there is a need to provide timely information prior to enrollment regarding DE. This is a way to serve the needs of the high school student, and provide them the same type of information that public school attendees receive. Procedures: * Develop a list of home school support groups/associations in New Hanover and Pender County. * Contact support groups/associations via , telephone and mailings, to discuss CFCC’s Dual Enrollment Program. * Speak at regularly scheduled Home School meetings once per semester about Dual Enrollment. College Goal: #6 and 7

Planning Priority #2 To improve academic advising in the Allied Health Advising Center by training the advisors on a semester basis. Why the need? Currently, there is no advisor training for Allied Health faculty. With the increased number of Allied Health faculty on staff, and the ever increasing number of advisees, training will decrease the advising anxiety felt by new faculty. Procedures: * Hold training sessions prior to the advising period each semester for the faculty who work in the AH Advising Center. * Student registration forms will be randomly checked for accuracy regarding course pre-requisites, program requirements, etc during training sessions. College Goal: #4 and7

Planning Priority #3 To identify and update information on various referral resources in the community, emergency and otherwise. Why the need? The makeup of our student population is very changing. We must be able to immediately refer students to the necessary services available. Procedures: * Establish a one on one rapport with personnel at community agencies (Names, Phone Numbers, Directions to the agency, method of payment, etc.) * Contact agencies by phone and office visits to discuss their procedures for referrals and whom to contact directly. * Compile an “at a glance” hard copy of agency information for each counselor. The list will also be placed on the shared drive for updating as necessary. Goal #7 and 12

To assist students and families in obtaining financial assistance to meet their educational goals by providing a diverse array of aid opportunities. MISSION

Planning Priority #1 Implementation and training for new internet software for Veterans Education Benefits. Why the need? To insure that Veteran students receive their financial benefits in the most timely method possible. Procedures: * Install the new software by March * Attend training sessions with the Department of Veteran Services. * Implement the Veterans Reporting/Information System from Modem to Internet Based. College Goal: #13

Planning Priority #2 Develop and i mplement programs to educate parents of Middle School students in New Hanover and Pender County on the availability of Financial Aid and how they can prepare for college. Why the need? Many parents do not begin planning and preparing to send their children to college early enough. These programs will provide timely information for parents to begin the planning. Procedures: * Inform Middle School Counselors of the programs and that FA staff is available for day and evening presentations. * Create handouts for the presentations on how to select a career and the educational institution for that career goal. Create informational handouts on FA…who should apply and when to apply to receive the maximum benefits. College Goal: #7 and 12

To recruit, enroll and retain a diverse student body. MISSION

Planning Priority #1 To increase the level of customer satisfaction with the services offered in the recruiting and admission processes. Why the Need? To serve the needs of students in a positive customer-oriented atmosphere effectively and efficiently. Procedures: * Utilize a customer service survey and point of contact survey to analyze the level of satisfaction of the services provided and implement an action plan to strengthen any areas of concern. * Streamline the process of determining and reporting residency status. * Increase attendance at orientation programs. College Goal: 7 & 12

Planning Priority #2 Strengthen recruiting efforts to increase enrollment and improve retention. Why the need? To expand and retain our student population to meet the employment demands of the community upon program completion. Procedures: * Restructure recruiting efforts to maximize results of high school visits and community events. * Expand recruiting targets to include the College Redirection component of the CFNC website. * Develop an online campus tour schedule for prospective students. *Utilize the non-completers survey to determine areas of concern and develop action plan to remedy weaknesses. College Goal: #6 and 7

OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR Mission To provide an effective registration process and insure the accuracy and integrity of student records.

Planning Priority #1 To provide a concise overview of the legal requirements and restrictions mandated by the Federal Right to Privacy Act (FERPA). Why the need? To insure compliance with the provisions of the FERPA Act. Procedures: * Develop a workshop to be presented at Fall In-Service. * Provide Personnel with a brochure on FERPA to be distributed and discussed during orientation for new employees. * Provide training during new faculty orientation each semester hosted by the academic deans. College Goal: #7 and 13

Planning Priority #2 Provide faculty in-service workshop on the proper methods of completing course attendance/withdrawal rosters. Why the need? Proper completion of course attendance rosters will insure the accuracy of information used to generate the FTE report. Procedures: *Develop procedure guidelines for faculty on completing the attendance rosters. *Schedule faculty in-service workshop and distribute guidelines. College Goal: #7 and 13

To provide extra-curricular activities to enhance the quality of the student’s educational experience at Cape Fear Community College. MISSION

Student Activities Planning Priority #1 Develop an annual calendar of student activities/athletics, and an advertising schedule including events and dates. Why the Need? To promote and advertise activities available to the student body, faculty, and staff. Procedures: * In conjunction with SGA; plan activities for upcoming year. * Develop and confirm contract dates with corresponding coaching staff and region athletic directors. College Goal: #12

To improve the process for continuing the tradition of CFCC’s graduating class’ contribution to the aesthetics of Cape Fear Community College’s campus and surrounding facilities. Procedures: * Allow SGA officers to recommend and propose a “permanent” project to be funded and approved. * Coordinate SGA recommendation of the gift to the college and assist with the implementation. College Goal: #2

Athletics Planning Priority #1 Develop and implement an academic support program for student athletes to improve retention and eligibility status. Why the need? To provide support and encourage academic success among our student-athletes, and to improve retention and eligibility status. Procedures: * Meet with LRC staff and develop a program that will enhance and assist all student-athletes on campus. * Develop an early warning system to identify student athletes who are in academic jeopardy. * Improve the existing progress report and study hall effectiveness. College Goal: #4, 7

Athletics Planning Priority #2 Develop a fund-raising program to provide more opportunities for student-athletes through scholarships. Why the need? “Scholarships = Championships!” Procedures : * Discuss opportunities with the CFCC Foundation and approve fund-raising campaign process. * Propose scholarship fund raising options to allow for future growth and outline the structure to insure adherence to college and NJCAA standards. College Goal: #7

The overall purpose of Student Development is to provide services to the students from recruitment through graduation. We are successful when students leave Cape Fear Community College with the tools they need to succeed.
