January 9, 2007 DINO Data In Ontario Winter Meeting Ryerson University, Toronto, ON

April 9, 2006DINO Scholar’s Portal Metadata Project History Dec Jeff led a discussion looking at our needs for providing easy access to our data collections Out of this grew an idea for building on the Scholar’s Portal collaboration by developing a centralized, web- based, data extraction/analysis system in Ontario Group agreed to develop a discussion paper reviewing the current situation and outlining the benefits to OCUL from collaboration

April 9, 2006DINO Three Major Hurdles Access Use Standards Over time these hurdles have been coming down The time is right to move to more collaboration These 3 presentations should make clear that things are coming together and opportunities are arising

April 9, 2006DINO Current Situation There is a clear recognized value from web-based services Less time spent downloading and processing data More time for outreach, teaching and promoting numeracy

April 9, 2006DINO Looking Forward Recognizing Need –Need for ongoing development of homegrown solutions –Emerging metadata standards imply that commercial solutions have evolved to point where their functionality surpasses homegrown solutions –We are at the point where the added value of commercial solutions exceeds the value of local customization

April 9, 2006DINO Looking Forward Building on Scholar’s Portal Model –Centralized provision of citation, abstracting and full-text databases has altered the way we look at the purchase, provision and preservation of these essential services –Is numeric data any different? –The model is there, we just need to apply it to data

April 9, 2006DINO Looking Forward The Case for Adopting Metadata Standards –This is the key for successful collaboration –The emergence of DDI as the de facto standard opens new opportunities for cooperation and collaboration –Discussion around DDI3 sends a strong signal for ongoing development and support –Stats Canada, DLI, RDC and ICPSR directions are focusing on the DDI standard and creating consistent metadata –CANDDI has articulated what is needed

April 9, 2006DINO Looking Forward The Case for a Centralized Data Extraction/Analysis System –This is secondary to establishing metadata standards –Commercial solution provides a more sophisticated and sustainable solution –From a research and teaching perspective we will benefit from a common data interface, shared metadata, broader base of expertise and richer body of teaching and research materials

April 9, 2006DINO Post Discussion Paper Discussion paper was presented to group April 2006 Feedback from the group was used to prepare final version for submission to OCUL in May Proposal was well received, asked for details on costs

April 9, 2006DINO Post Discussion Paper Over the summer we worked on developing costing for hardware and software Considered the staffing requirements

April 9, 2006DINO Post Discussion Paper No technical concerns related to hardware and software Carleton and Guelph offered to second ½ FTE each to the project Polling data was offered as proof of concept beyond DLI data

April 9, 2006DINO What is next Not all projects going before OCUL were costed They need more information to compare We have been asked to tighten our request Meeting in Guelph on the 10 th to work on this …next meeting

April 9, 2006DINO DISCUSSION……
