Higher and Intermediate 2 Spanish

Course outline  There are three themes in Higher Spanish: Lifestyles, Education and Work and The Wider World.  Within each theme are several topics, each of which will developed through listening, speaking, writing and reading exercises. Special attention will be paid to the various grammar points which will come up throughout these exercises. essays  Topics and sub-topics will contribute to essays. Each essay title will contribute to speaking assessment as well as prepare you for the external assessments.

Theme: Lifestyles Family, friends and society Issues in relationships with friends and family Role of the individual in the home and in society Advantages/disadvantages of home area Leisure and healthy living Leisure interests Health issues

Extended Reading and Viewing  You will watch a Spanish film and read several texts, in Spanish, related to that film.  You will be asked to write about the film, replying to several bullet points.  We will devote one double period per week to ER/V after the summer break.  We will complete the writing NAB for ER/V by Christmas.

Home and additional study  You will be given additional work to do after most lessons.  This will consist of finishing class work, reading tasks, listening tasks, writing up essays, translation exercises, grammar revision, vocabulary work in preparation of class work...  As well as finishing off or preparing work for class, you should make time for additional study (see handout)

Internal assessments Language (Lifestyles, Education and Work, Wider World) SPEAKING – presentation on topic of choice; follow-up discussion. 25% of overall mark, also external assessment (March) LISTENING – 1 text 2-3 minutes; responses in English; played up to three times (before prelims) READING – 1 text words (October/November) Extended reading and viewing WRITING – presentation and follow-up discussion on content of film and texts studied (December)

External assessments Speaking - 25% (as per internal assessment) Listening - 20% 1 text minutes, interview, played twice (20 minutes) Reading - 30% 1 text words (65 minutes), including translation into English Writing - 25% Personal opinion words, linked to L (40 minutes) Directed writing to stimulus in English words (40 minutes)

External assessments (Int 2) Speaking – 30% (as per internal assessment) Listening - 20% 3 items of seconds, played twice (approx. 30 minutes) Reading - 30% 3 texts words; 1 text words (70 minutes) Writing - 20% Job application to given scenario and headings, words (40 minutes)
