Biology Discussion Notes Thursday 5/7/2015

Goals for the Day 1.Be able to describe the major functions of the digestive system. 2.Be able to list the major organs of the digestive system and pair them with their functions. 3.Be able to create a sequence of how food moves through the digestive system 4.Be able to identify which system is responsible for solid waste and which is responsible for liquid wastes.

Question of the Day Name the diseases we presented on yesterday that affect the body systems listed below Circulatory- Nervous- Immune- Respiratory

What are the major functions of the digestive system? Break down food & absorb nutrients Think about how each part helps carry out these functions.

Digestion starts in the MOUTH! The chewing of the food and the saliva help to break down the food

Esophagus – moves food from mouth to stomach Peristalsis in Esophagus “Catch the Wave”

Peristalsis in Action

Stomach – holds and liquefies food VERY acidic—pH of 2-3 Rugae Enzyme used to break apart food

Liver removes glucose from the blood & stores it as glycogen for later use Largest internal organ— about 3 lbs. Liver produces bile— gall bladder stores bile Bile breaks up fats to increase- - ______ _____/________ ratio

Pancreas Secretes digestive enzymes Small Intestine Gall Bladder Tube Bile from Liver travels through pancreas Like the liver the pancreas assists in digestion even though food doesn’t actually pass through it.

Villi Notice blood inside of them! They increase--- small intestine – digestion/absorption Most digestion and ALL absorption here Most enzymes come from pancreas to aid digestion Bile secreted from gall bladder

Where do the circulatory & respiratory systems connect? Small parts – increase surface area/volume ratio

Main job: absorb water remaining “food”—the sponge of the digestive system! What is “appendicitis”? Large intestine a.k.a.-

Excretory System – eliminates liquid waste (Urine) What system eliminates solid waste? Blood flows into the kidneys The kidneys filter out the liquid waste in the blood

List the major organs of the digestive system in order starting with the intake of food
