Solar PV Design & Technical Sales Certificate A partnership between HIRED and Saint Paul College

Goal In order to meet current and future demand for solar-generated electricity, workers must be trained in industry-specific competencies, particularly those that have been identified by NABCEP. Our 286 plus hour program (This does not include final project hours) will assist job seekers gain industry-driven NABCEP certification, employment and/or self- employment.

Partnership HIRED Since 2005, HIRED has placed hundreds of Twin Cities workers in high-wage jobs through the implementation of employer-driven, award-winning training initiatives in manufacturing, health care and green jobs. Saint Paul College - Customized Training & Continuing Education For over the past three years, Saint Paul College’s Customized Training and Continuing Education has been a national leader in developing and implementing rigorous training in the Design, Sales, & Installation of Solar PV systems. Through its current program, which leads to certification from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), the college has added 30 certified Solar PV Installers to the workforce and have 20 people working on their Solar PV Design & Technical Sales Certifications.

Course Content Solar system theory Industry related math  Geometry  Trigonometry  Algebra Roof and workplace safety: Hands-on roof safety and climbing performed Hands-on use of industry hard & software:  OnGrid – developed by OnGrid Solar  SunEye 210 GPS – provided by Solmetric Corp.  Energy Periscope – developed by Energy Matters, LLC  SketchUp Pro – provided by Google  PV Designer/PV Watts/RetScreen/Solar Pathfinder/Pictometery Financial Analysis and Sales Principles Prepares students for the Entry Level exam and assists students to qualify for NABCEP Solar PV Technical Sales Certificate exam.

Completion of Classroom Training A.Perform a preliminary audit and customer qualification B.Go to site perform Solar Site Analysis giving  Solar window measurements  Find and propose location of solar solution; including options/alternatives C.At site recognize existing electrical equipment  Determine electrical needs that solar can serve  Access and understand customer’s electrical bills  Understand other energy sources and uses D.Perform rate analysis to determine if rate switching is valuable E.Perform a financial analysis to determine the cost benefit  Should include:  Fuel escalation rate  Inflation rate F.Other  OSHA 10 certificate  Hands-on experience with current industry hard & software  Real Solar Projects: provide complete assessment, system design and sales proposal

Grant Enhancement – Business Plan Development Stage 1: Develop generic PV-Specific Business Plan Template, as follows:  Targeting residential, commercial and/or non-profit market sectors  Built-in market analysis on 7-county metro of each market sector  Quantification of size and requirements to service each sector  Marketing Plan – covering product, price, selling and promotion  Operations Plan – evaluate, assess, quote and proposal submission  Financial Projection – 3-year projection, based on marketing goals Stage 2: Deliver the PV-Business Planning training, as follows:  Train and instruct on how to use and complete the PV-BPD Template  Provide on-line delivery of business concepts training  Conduct 1-on-1 workshop sessions for each participant (8 sessions)  Review overall business plan prepared by each PV participant

Grant Enhancement – Business Plan Development cont. Stage 3: Mentor and Sustain the launch of entering business, as follows:  Monthly business consulting and mentoring (12 months)  Technical consulting, enhancing and supporting the PV participant  Document annual summary of business success story and needs

Grant Outcome (to date)  September 2011 – start date of solar PV Technical Sales training  80% completed training to date  55% passed the NABCEP exam and remainder are scheduled for refresher work  New class of 12 began on January 30, 2012

Challenges/Lessons Learned  Student eagerness to begin entrepreneurial work affected class attendance for several  Students have voiced the need for additional assistance in strengthening their business marketing and business plan development  Creating designs and client proposals is very time intensive on the front end, with DOL hourly wage calculations being reported later upon securing sales contract  Advantages for future recruiting: electrical, general contractor license, entrepreneurial mindset
