5 Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training Serving the seven county Arrowhead Region since 1974. Locations in Aitkin, and as a Workforce Center: Virginia, Hibbing, International Falls, Cloquet, Grand Rapids and Duluth. With state and federal funding, serve dislocated workers, low income adults, public assistance recipients and at-risk youth. 28 professional career counselors

6 Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training How the project started: To support local industry and help develop a solar employment base, we chose to become involved with this project. In our region, we have a solar manufacturing plant that expressed a need for rural Photovoltaic installers, and we have a local community college with an established a solar program.

8 Renewable Energy Project GOALS Connect individuals to renewable energy careers and employment. Provide career pathway coaching, training funds, stackable credentials, job search guidance and employment direction.

9 Renewable Energy Project Renewable Energy Technician Certificate 212 hours Photovoltaic (PV) Systems 10 hours of OSHA training Training prepares students for NABCEP PV Entry Level Exam. Solar PV Installer Certification 230 hours Solar PV Installer Training 10 hours of OSHA training Training prepares students to take the NABCEP PV Installer Certification.

10 Renewable Energy Project Outcomes 80% of participants to complete Solar Energy Training; receive Renewable Energy Technician Certificates; receive OSHA Certificate; and retain jobs after 6 months of employment. 50% to complete a National American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Solar Industry recognized credential. 12 – 15 paid internships 12 – 24 complete Creative Job Search Class (up to 8 hours) to prepare for securing employment.

11 Renewable Energy Project – Results to date Renewable Energy Technician – 1 st session ended June 29 14 new enrollments, 13 completed. 2 employed, 4 internships, 8 continued on to Solar PV Installer. Solar PV Installer – 1st session ended October 26 10 enrollments (2 new) October 26. Job search assistance being provided and internships being developed. Renewable Energy Technician – 2nd session started Oct. 30. 16 new enrollments Total enrollments to date: 32 – PROJECT GOAL 24. Total completing Creative Job Search: 10

13 Renewable Energy Project Developed and utilized a consistent logo to promote the Renewable Energy Program on flyers, our website, e-news, newspapers, and regional colleges.

14 Renewable Energy Project A Job Developer was appointed to this specific project. The Job Developer met with the course instructor to determine the types of skills students could get from the training. To sell the student, those skills were related to functions that would potentially benefit the employer. A flyer was also developed to leave with potential employers.

15 Renewable Energy Project Grow Your Business with a Renewable Energy Program Intern NO COST TO YOU! Renewable energy interns receive comprehensive training in Photovoltaic (PV) theory, design, installations, maintenance, energy auditing and troubleshooting. Interns may have a number of skills that can complement the goals of your business or organization. Renewable Energy Technician Interns Functions Could Include: Energy Use and Efficiency Audits Conventional Energy Tasks (wiring, insulation…) Maintenance and InstallationsElectrical Code Review and Support Energy Related Construction LaboringAdministrative Support and Record Keeping Customer Service & Sales Public Relations and Community Outreach Building and Site Remodeling Planning Day-to-day Business Operations Functions Permitting and Regulatory ItemsPV System Design & Hands-on Installation The Renewable Energy Technician Certificate prepares students for the solar industry recognized certificate of the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Photovoltaic Entry Level Exam.

16 Renewable Energy Project Challenges, positives and lessons learned: Challenge: late grant start date Positive: Grant extension to June 2012 - allowed for a 3rd class. Positive: Job Developer brought on the project Challenge: Planned 4 week internships- Employers and students requesting more time. Challenge: Developing solar skills while building employment capacity in the region. Takes 2-6 weeks to develop an totally new internship worksite with this new energy sector because need to educate each employer on students’ skills and employment opportunities. Learned: Large potential for self-employment. Contacted UMD Entrepreneurial Program to come and speak to class.

21 Project Overview Assist individuals with gaining skills for jobs within two growing industries – Green Building and Facilities Management and Green Manufacturing and help them prepare for and attain industry specific certifications.

22 Project Overview The Green Employment Initiative utilizes a Career Pathways Model. Training includes contextualized learning, particularly in basic and applied math, as well as hands-on experience through on-the-job training (Green Building/Facilities) and a hands-on soldering lab (Green Core Manufacturing Skills).
