The Metric System System of measurement based on units of 10 Also known as- System International (SI) Used by scientists worldwide Allows for sharing info

Distance Meter- base unit for distance measured with a ruler, meter stick, tape measure, etc. Length: Circumference- around circle Diameter- across circle Radius- ½ across a circle Perimeter- around a space Width: Thickness Height: Tall, short, long Area: A = L x W ( _m2)

Mass or Weight Gram- base unit for mass/weight measured with a scale or balance Mass- Amount of matter in an object Never changes Weight- Measure of gravity pulling downward on an object Changes with gravity

Volume Liter- base unit for volume measured with a graduated cylinder Measures liquid volume Meniscus- Curvature in top of liquid Caused by adhesion of water to sides of cylinder Volume- amount of space an object takes up Capacity Use Fluid Displacement for irregular solid (sides not measurable) Put known amount of liquid in grad. cyl. Drop in object Determine difference of volume Use V = L x W x H ( _m3) for regular sides (measurable sides) Use a ruler/meter stick, etc.
