 The Department of Homeland Security established by the 2002 Homeland Security Act, in part as a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. HOMELAND SECURITY

 The Department of Homeland Security is made up of previously separate national security activities, including:  Counterterrorism  Border Security & Immigration  Disaster response and recovery  Cybersecurity HOMELAND SECURITY

 The primary purpose of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is to  Protect the UNITED STATES from:  terrorist attacks  man-made accidents  natural disasters HOMELAND SECURITY

 Counterterrorism is protecting the public from terrorist attacks.  What would be some of the responsibilities of the counterterrorism unit? COUNTERTERRORISM

 Counterterrorism activities include:  Detecting explosives in public spaces and transportation networks  Helping protect critical infrastructure and cyber networks from attack  Detecting agents of biological warfare  Building information-sharing partnerships with state and local law enforcement COUNTERTERRORISM

 The Department of Homeland Security prevents and investigates illegal movements across US borders, including the smuggling of people, drugs, cash, and weapons. BORDER SECURITY

 The Department is working to strengthen security on the southwest border to disrupt the drug, cash and weapon smuggling that fuels cartel violence in Mexico by adding manpower and technology. BORDER SECURITY

 Though historically of less concern, international terrorism has made the border with Canada increasingly important to monitor; the department supports smart security on the northern border and facilitates travel and trade. BORDER SECURITY

 In the event of a terrorist attack, natural disaster or other large-scale emergency, the Department of Homeland Security provides a coordinated, comprehensive federal response and mount a swift and effective recovery effort. PREPAREDNESS, RESPONSE AND RECOVERY
