2 NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS
On March 30, President Obama signed a new Presidential Policy Directive (PPD) on National Preparedness. 

3 OBJECTIVE: Strengthen the security and resilience of the United States through systematic preparation for the full spectrum of possible occurrences that include acts of terrorism, pandemics, significant accidents, and catastrophic natural disasters

4 NATIONAL PREPARATION HIGH BENEFIT TO COST ACTIONS TERRORISM
GOAL: STRENGTHEN THE USA’s PREPARATION PANDEMICS HIGH BENEFIT TO COST ACTIONS SIGNIFICANT ACCIDENTS NATURAL DISASTERS CATASTROPHES THREATS TO SECURITY

5 THE PRINCIPLES FOR NATIONAL PREPARATION
OBJECTIVE: STRENGTHEN PREPARATION THEN CLOSER COLLABORATIONS AN ALL-OF-NATION EFFORT MORE ENGAGEMENT

6 THE DIRECTIVE EMPHASIZES THREE NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS PRINCIPLES:
An all-of-Nation approach, aimed at enhancing integration of effort across Federal, State, local, tribal, and territorial governments; …

7 THE DIRECTIVE EMPHASIZES THREE NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS PRINCIPLES:
… Closer collaboration with the private and non-profit sectors; AND … More engagement of individuals, families and communities

8 CORE CAPABILITIES NECESSARY FOR PREPAREDNESS
Prevention - Those capabilities necessary to avoid, prevent, or stop unacceptable socio-economic impacts.

9 CORE CAPABILITIES NECESSARY FOR PREPAREDNESS
Protection - Those capabilities necessary to secure the homeland against acts of terrorism and manmade or natural disasters;

10 CORE CAPABILITIES NECESSARY FOR PREPAREDNESS
Mitigation - Those capabilities necessary to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impacts.

11 CORE CAPABILITIES NECESSARY FOR PREPAREDNESS
Response - Those capabilities necessary to save lives, protect property and the environment, and meet basic human needs after an incident has occurred.

12 CORE CAPABILITIES NECESSARY FOR PREPAREDNESS
Recovery - Those capabilities necessary to assist communities affected by an incident to restore all impacted systems to normal or better quickly and effectively.
