Three Main Operating Systems MacintoshWindowsUnix MS-DOS Windows 3.x Windows NT Windows 9x Windows XP MacOS 7.x MacOS 8.x MacOS 9.x OSX Very different family tree…

Unix Debian Linux AIX Solaris Red Hat HPUX FreeBSD UltrixAnd many more…

How do so many companies sell/give away Unix?

Different Strategies Windows is a product. Macintosh is a product. Unix is a standard.

Pitchers for Blenders If you break the pitcher for your Oster brand blender, you have to buy another pitcher from Oster, because only Oster can make pitchers that fit.

Railroad Cars Railroad cars have to be built to run on standard gauge rails, spaced 4’8.5” apart. Any company can build railroad cars, as long as they fit those tracks.

The Difference Microsoft and Apple make operating systems that are products—they hold the patents and the copyrights, and no one else can make Windows or Macintosh. Unix is an operating system standard— any company can make and sell (or give away) “Unix” as long as it complies with the standard.

Not All Versions of Unix are Equal Minor differences between the versions of Unix exist. –Example: I couldn’t change pollyperfect’s password on the first day of class because it turns out that Solaris’s version of passwd only works with logins that are 8 characters long or shorter. This is not “normal” behavior for Unix.

Why so many versions of Unix? They run on different hardware: –Solaris: Sun computers –AIX: IBM RS/6000 computers –HPUX: HP workstations –Linux: Intel computers

Linux Runs on Intel hardware, which is very cheap. Linux itself is free… it is written by hackers who tirelessly improve it.
