Rationale for Cholesterol Testing 2002 Rx Company Sponsored Initiative 52% of the respondents did not know their cholesterol level before the screening event 34% of respondents contacted their doctor about managing their cholesterol after the event 57% of the people who contacted their doctor did so within one month 36% of the people who contacted their doctor reported that they were prescribed medication to manage their cholesterol 28% paid more attention to prescription drug advertisements after the screening event 60% of those surveyed would return at least once or twice a year for screening; 37% even more often 80% of the people surveyed agreed that screenings are a good place to learn about health and health care products to manage cholesterol 52% preferred screening events to television, magazine or other DTC marketing as an information source * Refer to Taking Action: Screening Programs Motivate Consumer Behavior Research for details

Impact of OTC Statins on the Biometric Testing Industry The biometric industry may need to respond to the launch of OTC statins with the following strategies: Develop professional staff to support retailers who may be interested in outsourcing their screening services Develop to develop field-based consultative services for those retailers who are interested in screening themselves in partnership with organizations that will train pharmacists Link education about OTC statins to screening programs performed in other venues e.g. Employers Develop health educational resources, with OTC statin companies, to distribute during counseling to insure appropriate consumers consider OTC statin utilization.
