3 Why Medication Adherence?
Medication adherence means taking medicine as directed by a health care professional Three out of four Americans report that they don’t always take their medications as directed – which leads to serious health consequences As more Americans develop chronic conditions the costs for health care continue to grow for both patients and the health care system

5 Script Your Future Campaign Overview
Coalition of 135+ public and private stakeholder organizations, led by the National Consumers League Health care Consumer Insurance Business Pharmaceutical Government agencies Adherence researchers ScriptYourFuture.org provides adherence tools and resources for patients, family caregivers and health care professionals Focused on cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and diabetes NCL began planning for the medication adherence campaign in 2008, with support from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

6 Campaign Resources Health care professional website (ScriptYourFuture.org/HCP) An online resource for health care professionals launched in March 2011. The site provides adherence tools and information for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc. to share with their patients to help them take their medication as prescribed.

7 Campaign Resources Consumer website (ScriptYourFuture.org)
A website focused on consumers launched in May 2011. It provides consumer-friendly resources to improve adherence, like checklists, medication reminders, and tips for talking with their health care professionals. Consumers can sign a pledge: “I WILL take my meds…” customized with their own personal reasons for deciding to commit to medication adherence.

8 What is the Adherence Challenge?
Two months long Challenge open to pharmacy and other health professions students Engages the next generation of health care professionals Promotes the importance of medication adherence, using Script Your Future materials Sponsored by: American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation, American Medical Association, National Community Pharmacists Association, American Pharmacists Association, and the National Consumers League The teams will be implementing creative solutions and outreach in their communities to raise awareness and improve understanding about medication adherence, using Script Your Future materials.

9 Why have a Challenge? Our goals:
Plan and implement activities in our community to raise awareness about medication adherence Secure media interest in the issue of medication adherence and our activities Measure and report on our impact Engage the next generation of health care leaders Encourage the strength of inter-professional care teams in promoting adherence. Outreach to local communities The Adherence Challenge is the perfect way to reach lots of patients and consumers. Student pharmacists and other health professions students: Challenge is rooted in the schools of pharmacy with an inter-professional focus Trusted, accessible members of the health care team Strength of inter-professional care teams in promoting adherence Culture of community outreach within Colleges and Universities– the Challenge allows you to tap into existing structures within your community to spread knowledge about adherence. 10 Medication Adherence Team Challenge Outreach (2011-2015)
Since the first Challenge in 2011, Health professions students: Have reached millions of consumers directly and through the media Held over 1000 individual events Directly counseled tens of thousands of patients Contest began in 2011 and was held in October 2011 for student pharmacists using campaign materials to encourage adherence. The next year, the Challenge was held in February of 2013 and was expanded to include inter-professional teams! Student pharmacists have always played a major role in the SYF campaign. At our national launch in Washington DC, students talked with passersby about medication adherence and participated in the Q&A with Surgeon General Regina Benjamin. Dr. Benjamin was very impressed with the students, and remarked on the dedication of the next generation of pharmacists!

12 Medication Adherence Team Challenge
Activities from last year’s challenge. Numerous inter-professional teams held events at local pharmacies, appeared on television shows and much more. Some teams even created content for outreach to young students.
