Module 3: Celebrating Growth power point 2

Objective The student will describe professional behavior regarding confidentiality of referrals.

Discussion Questions 1. How would you approach a parent or caregiver about the need for a referral for developmental screening of their child? 2. What do you need to consider before talking to a parent or caregiver? 3. Why is confidentiality important? What could be possible outcomes for not maintaining confidentiality?

Developmental screening Developmental screening tools will provide more clues on how a child is progressing and where the challenges are.

Developmental Screening tools- Points to know You may notice some “red flags” or atypical development. This should prompt you to talk to the family. Developmental screening tools will provide more clues on how a child is progressing and where the challenges are.

Other points to know: Sometimes developmental screenings provide the information required to request early intervention, such as specific supports for targeted delays, if needed. You are required by Washington state law to advise the family of their child's progress and issues relating to developmental needs and program practices.

A List of ways you might prepare yourself to speak to the family as a professional: Sharing observation data with a child’s family can be painful and intimidating. Good documentation of your observations and knowledge of typical child development will help you to share the information objectively. Knowing the local resources for referral is essential to help families understand what their next steps are. It is essential as a professional in this field to keep all observations and referrals confidential.
