Breakout Group 1 National Disaster Risk Management (DRM) – Different challenges, different approaches

Representatives from - Brunei - Indonesia - Myanmar - Malaysia - Philippines - Thailand - UN Agency

The Disaster Management structures of the following countries were shared during the session - Brunei - Indonesia - Malaysia - Myanmar - Philippines - Thailand

On the question of the involvement of CSOs into the National Disaster Management - Indonesia has involved the CSOs and ask for their input into the legal framework of National DM - Philippines is currently expanding the National DM with the Disaster Risk Management Council that will involve the CSOs, from the national to the local level. A new accreditation system will be put into place by the government for the CSOs.

- The Malaysian Government is involving the CSOs at the National level when it comes to disaster management - The Myanmar Disaster Action Plan is in existence but input from the CSOs should be made possible

The Strategic National Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction for Brunei is still under development but the input of CSOs into the process is being considered

We also heard from a grassroot level organization, Thai Innovation for Safety Group, based in Thailand in taking the steps forward with closer coordination between the Government and CSOs

As suggested by the Philippines representative, the AHA Center located in Jakarta should be the backbone for any regional level coordination within ASEAN following the AADMER framework.
