Presentation transcript:

HOUSEHOLD WATER USE Landscaping (lawns and gardens) account for about 50% of our water use. Showers account for 18% Toilets use about 20% Central Valley residents (that’s where you live) use approximately 300 gallons per person per day Central Coast residents use approximately 50 gallons per day. Predict which region in California do you think pays for water per gallon used?

HYPOTHESIZE HOW MUCH WATER IT TAKES TO… Brush your teeth? Wash your car? Use the dishwasher? Flush the toilet? Take a bath or shower? Run a load of laundry in the washing machine?

Every week?

WHERE DOES OUR WATER SUPPLY COME FROM? In an average year, 200 million acre feet of water falls in the form of rain or snow in California. One acre foot is about 326,000 gallons of water or enough to supply two typical families for a year. So, an average amount of rainfall supplies 400 million families for one year.

There are 36 million, 553 thousand, 215 people living in California. We have enough water, right? It rains the same average amount in California every year, doesn’t it?

It takes 3.3 acre feet of water (1,075,800 gallons) to grow enough food for one family for one year. We only feed people in California, right? Or does California’s economy rely on agriculture?

Suppose it is an average year and California gets 200 million acre feet of rain or snow fall during the winter. Over half of this water soaks into the ground, evaporates or is soaked up by vegetation.

Generally, about 82 million acre feet of water remain for human use. 48% goes to environmental uses such as streams, wild and scenic rivers, and wetlands.48% goes to environmental uses such as streams, wild and scenic rivers, and wetlands. 41% is used by agriculture41% is used by agriculture 9% is used by cities and industry9% is used by cities and industry
