Using Water Wisely

1.Where do you think the water you drink comes from? 2. What is ground water and water supplies? Think About It

Groundwater ► The water found inside the rocks below Earth’s surface.

Aquifer ► The rock layer that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater.

Groundwater..\..\video clips\11.3 Use Water Wisely\Groundwater_asf.asf

Water table ►T►T►T►The upper surface of underground water.

Overdraft ► In some of the aquifers more water is being pumped out that is being replaced by rain.

Water in California ►R►R►R►Reservoirs supplies water you drink and use to shower. ►C►C►C►California Aqueduct carries water from Northern California to Southern California because there is not enough rainfall.

List all sources from which Californians get water. California acquires its water from precipitation and by transporting the water from Northern California and from other areas.

Water Pollution ► Waste matter or other material that is introduced into water and that is harmful to organisms.

Water Pollution

Clean Water Act of 1972 ► Restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation’s waters. ► Goal was to make all surface water clean enough for fishing and swimming by 1983

Summarize how the Clean Water Act of 1972 has helped reduce water pollution. The Clean Water Act of 1972 has helped to improve the water quality of lakes and rivers so that they are fit for fishing and swimming. Also, the act opened the door for other water-quality laws.

Conservation ►T►T►T►The preservation and wise use of natural resources.

Conserving Water ► Farmers use drip irrigation reducing runoff and evaporation

Farmers

Conserving Water ► Install low-flow toilets and shower heads ► Water lawn at night ► Xeriscaping- design landscape with native plants.

Conservation

List four things that you can do to conserve water. I can avoid running water while brushing my teeth, take shorter showers, wash the car with only a bucket and hose, and wash only full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.

Review Questions 1. W hy does Northern California transport water to Southern and Central California? Northern California receives most of the state’s precipitation. However, most of the state’s population lives in Central and Southern California. Therefore, water from the north needs to be transported to areas that need the water.

2. Why is it better to water your lawn at night instead of during the day? If you water your lawn at night, less water will be lost to evaporation. 3. How is reducing the pollution in streams and groundwater linked to water conservation? Reducing the pollution in streams and groundwater means there is more clean water that can be used. Therefore, reducing pollution conserves clean water.
