Delivering Secure Continuing Education Using New Digital Rights Management Encryption Process at The University of Alabama in Huntsville Robert L. Middleton, P.E. Senior Research Engineer Office of the Provost Karen Mack Clanton Interim Director, UAH Continuing Education UAH ® The University of Alabama in Huntsville

New Recording Classroom Classroom re-furbished for 30 students, new wall color, overhead projector, podium, document camera, fluorescent overhead lights and floodlights, and remotely controlled (PTZ) overhead recording digital video camera. Control room enables remote control of camera and overhead projector. Podium computer only delivers PowerPoint presentation to overhead projector. Control room computer records instructor lectures in MS Producer 2 and captures synchronized presentation materials. Instructors wireless microphone output is captured through audio mixer.

New Recording Classroom Continued Technician has capability to switch between capture of video and document cameras. Instructor can switch input to overhead projector from PowerPoint to document camera. Microsoft Producer 2 on control room computer records lecture and enables post processing for interim recording on a Basic CD. Basic CD contains all of the material on the final protected CD except the video isnt yet encrypted. Classroom allows delivery of live lectures, and recording of them in conventional formats including whiteboard use.

Delivery of Recorded Class Material To eliminate bandwidth concerns, the only reliable mode of delivering high quality computer based class video to all locations is still via CD or DVD. We also require low bandwidth Internet connectivity for DRM security checks, chat/ , interconnectivity, class website info, and automated graded quizzes.

Choice of Class Delivery Mode for Students Previous experiences with unprotected CDs have not been favorable, particularly for Continuing Education classes. The new Digital Rights Management encoding tool for copyright protection of Music and Entertainment CDs was evaluated. We chose to use Microsofts DRM approach, through a third party provider, for protection of our CD delivered to Continuing Education students worldwide.

Adding Digital Rights Management Security Protection to Class CDs DRM is an encoding tool that locks the digital audio and video content and then limits access of content to users with a proper license. Text is incorporated in the final secure CD to first connect securely to the Digital Rights Management Server which then verifies both the students registration and pre-assigned access details with our server.

Limiting Access Access is limited by specific dates, number of uses, and to authorized usernames and passwords. If this pre-recorded information permits the student to still have access to the CD video, then it sends a Key back to the students computer enabling de-encryption of the video. Access events are recorded by the Learning Management System for tracking of student web interaction.

Successful Results of using DRM for Academic Use The use of Digital Rights Management for academic purposes broadens the application of the technology beyond its original use and provides a cost effective and reliable solution to the issue of intellectual property protection.

Benefits of DRM for UAH Continuing Education Classes Our Instructors are the recognized experts in their fields, and certainly dont want their Intellectual Property copied. Some classes are for industries who want their material protected. With DRM protection of CDs, we control user access and can customize access parameters. Copied CDs are thus useless now.

Reviews of new security approach with our CE Customers Prior to offering any classes in this new format, we offered detailed demonstrations to our major corporate and federal customers with very favorable results. Quality questionnaires for students and corporate sponsors have continued to be extremely favorable and supportive of the new format.

Demonstration We will now demonstrate the delivery of an eTraining Solutions course through UAH Continuing Education from a protected CD over the Internet.

Summary and Conclusions The inclusion of extremely high quality video (all digital), DRM security, and online quizzes, has enhanced UAHs Continuing Education services. These approaches could potentially be used for delivering Continuing Education, and perhaps Academic classes, to overseas locations in Europe and the Far East. This would particularly apply to U.S. Government personnel in these locations.

Task now Underway Current outsourcing of Digital Rights Management efforts partially resulted from difficulties in meeting Microsofts DRM agreements in time to begin protected classes. Now in the process of securing full DRM capability at UAH.
