MATHS IS FUN Session 1 – Autumn 2011

Introduction What is it all about? When is it happening and how often?

Awe and Wonder! Whoever has the envelope, congratulations! You are our first volunteer. I need a three-digit number where the hundreds column is at least two digits bigger than the tens column. Now open the envelope and read out what it says...

Place Value Thousands Hundreds Tens Units Tenths Hundredths

Place Value Using your arrow cards make the following numbers:

Place Value

Place Value ?90

Awe and Wonder I need three random two digit numbers. I will suggest two random two-digit numbers and add them all together. If anyone works out the answer quicker than me I’ll buy them a chocolate bar of their choice.

Number Bonds to 20 Moving and Shaking We would like you to arrange yourselves so that there are three adult groups and three children's groups. Each group should have a set of number cards from 0-9. Your task is to make 5 largest two digit numbers possible.

Number Bonds to 20 Using your number cards from 0 to 20 make pairs of cards which total 17? Now how many pairs can you make with a total of 16? What about 15? Have any patterns emerged? Now try using three cards to make 17. What is the maximum number of ways doing this, using each card only once?

Number Bonds to 20 Using your 0-20 number cards again, predict how many pairs you can make that have a difference of 7. Now test it. Now how many pairs can you make with a difference of 8? What about 9? Can you see any patterns? Does the pattern still fit when finding a difference of 6 or 10?

Heads and Feet Farmer Fred keeps chickens and sheep. Every morning to check they were all there he would count their heads and their feet. If he counts 20 heads and 44 feet how many sheep has he got and how many chickens has he got?
