3 Application Problem  At the school fair, 29 cupcakes were sold and 19 were left over. How many cupcakes were brought to the fair?

4 Fluency Practice : you will need, personal boards or paper  What is the place value of the digit that’s changing?  124, 134, 144,_____  Count with me saying the value of the digit I’m pointing to  124, 134, 144  Write what number comes next in the pattern.  154  What was the pattern?  Add 10

5 Sums to Ten  This is the basic problem for a pattern 9 + 3  Once you have solved this problem, solve 19 + 3, 29 + 3…. What would come next?  39 + 3  This is the basic problem for a pattern 9 + 6  Once you have solved this problem, solve 19 + 6, 29 + 6…. What would come next?  39 + 6

6 Concept Development you will need place value disks, personal boards, or paper  We’ve been modeling addition with place value disks, but we don’t have to use these disks. We can draw them! Watch.  32 + 24  How many tens in 32?  How many ones?  Let’s count to be sure my drawing is correct.  10, 20, 30, 31, 32.

7 Concept Development you will need place value disks, personal boards, or paper  Now I’ll add 24 to my drawing. How many tens?  2 tens  How many ones should I draw?  4 ones  Remember to always draw your disks in the correct place value  Let’s count to be sure my model is correct  10, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24.

8 Concept Development you will need place value disks, personal boards, or paper  Now we solve  Do 2 ones and 4 ones make a ten?  Write the answer below the line in the ones place  Now we add our tens. 3 tens + 2 tens = ?  Write the answer below the line in the tens place  So, 32 + 24 equals 56

9 Concept Development you will need place value disks, personal boards, or paper  Let’s try another one  Write 19 + 41  Draw your number disks to match your number sentence.  Begin adding your ones  What did you notice?  We need to bundle!  What you do to your model you do to your numbers. 1 9 + 4 1

This way we remember to add it in when we count the ten.  Now we add our ones  Now add our tens  19 + 41 = 60 1 9 + 4 1 1

12 Problem Set  Do your best to finish the problem set.  Remember to write/draw your numbers in the correct place value.  Always start with you ones and check if you need to bundle.
