Estimating Products SRB 225-228

Terms Products – Answer to a multiplication problem. Factors – The numbers multiplied to find a product. Magnitude Estimate – An estimate to the answer of a problem; it tells you whether the answer is the tenths, ones, tens, hundreds, thousands . . .

Steps Sample Problem: 14 x 17 = ? Round each of the factors so that there is one number followed by zero(es). Ex. 14 -> 10 x17 -> 20 Solve the estimate to find the place value of the product. 10 x 20 = 200; the answer is in the hundreds.

Additional Practice 4. 20 x 30 = 600 18 x 21 7 x 6,245 99 x 2 The answer is in the hundreds. 2. 10 x 6,000 = 60,000 The answer is in the ten-thousands. 3. 100 x 1 = 100 The answer is in the hundreds 4. 20 x 30 = 600 The answer is in thehundreds
