How it all Began  A look at nearly two centuries of video production history. It all started in 1832 when Joseph Plateau invented the Fantascope—also called Phenakistiscope or "spindle viewer"—that simulated motion. From there, it was on to Hyatt's celluloid in 1869, Muybridge's "Horse in Motion" in 1878, Marey's "photographic gun" in the 1880s, Thomas Edison and William Dickson's Kinetograph in 1892, the Cinematographe in 1895, and a world of innovation in the 1900s that included milestones in both technology and the types of films produced.

1832, 1869, and 1878  Belgian inventor, Joseph Plateau invented the Fantascope also called Phenakistiscope or “spindle viewer,” a device that simulated motion.  John Wesley Hyatt developed Celluloid. It was patented in 1870 and trademarked in 1873, then later used as the base for photographic film.  Edward Muybridge successfully captured a galloping hose, proving that all four of the horses feet were off the ground at the same time. He did this by setting up a series of cameras along the horses projected path. He published his work in 1882 and called it “horse in motion.”

1800`s, 1891, 1892, and 1894  1800`s- French innovator and physiologist Etienne-Jules Marey developed the “Photographic Gun,” as it was often referred to, which could take multiple photographs per second. The term shooting a film was most likely derived from Marey's invention.  William Dickson filmed Monkeyshines No.1, the first motion picture ever produced on photographic film in the U.S  The world`s first film production studio, “The Black Maria,” was built on the grounds of Edison`s Laboratories in West Orange, New Jersey.  A short film by William K.L Dickson titled Carmencita featured the first female in a US motion picture.
