AGENDA OVERVIEW PART ONE: Immersion into STEM Education through Family Engineering PART TWO: Sharing Successes PART THREE: Team Action Planning 5 Lunch !

GOALS Build a shared understanding of the elements of effective STEM instruction Increase awareness of the research supporting effective teaching and learning Experience, first-hand, an immersion activity modeling effective STEM instruction Take action together as school district teams 6

PART ONE: Team Up Engineering and Collaboration TEAM UP!

Engineering Experience Task: You are engineers hired to design the framework for the model of a tall building. Materials Available: 20 Pipe cleaners. Constraints: Work as a team. Tower must be free standing-not attached to anything and not hand-held. Start with discussion and sketch of potential plan. Listen for the chime – important instructions will follow!

Engineering Experience Continued Due to significant cuts in budgets, you will now have only 15 pipe cleaners to work with. Put 5 back in the bag.

Engineering Experience Continued We have just learned that this project is being managed by a company from another country. Their engineers do not speak English. All team members are now forbidden to speak.

Engineering Experience Continued Human Resources has just informed us that we have to reduce our workforce by 50%. All team members must now work with one hand behind their back.

PART TWO: Sharing Successes Part 1 Richland District Middle Schools Livingston Elementary

13 LUNCH!

PART TWO: Sharing Successes Part 2 Learning From Each Other Poster Session

Your Focus for the Poster Session Listen for how teams have used resources from the SLN: Family engineering Presentation resources Readings Parent/community engagement 15

Poster Session Leave a docent with your poster 3 minutes per poster – listen for the chime! 16

TEAM DISCUSSION AND SENSE-MAKING What did you hear that is similar to what you have done but had an interesting twist? Was there anything you heard that might change the direction your team will take next year? Were there ideas you could implement right away? 17

PART THREE: ACTION PLANNING

Action Plan Continuum 19 Action Plan? What the heck’s an Action Plan? We have a strong Action Plan and we REALLY work it! Well….we HAVE an Action Plan, but need a nudge to really make it happen We have a pretty good Action Plan, and we are making some of it happen

Final Notes… See You Next Year! Elementary and Secondary Cadres Building Administrators +Teacher Leader(s) Please Complete Your Evaluations New Technology-easy as PIE! Drive safely! 20 SLN Evaluation AESD Survey
