Science for All Students: Parent Workshop

Why is Science Important? Science makes kids (and adults!) more aware of the world around them. Science supports concept development, problem solving skills, and process skills.

How do we learn science? By Knowing Scientific content and knowledge By Doing Scientific process and skills

How do we do science? Inquiry! Approach is student-centered, active vs. passive Uses problem solving and critical thinking skills Develops skills that can be applied to future school or work situations Allows opportunities for reflection Is more engaging and interesting

Making observations Posing questions Examining books and other information sources Planning investigations Using tools to gather and analyze data Proposing answers, explanations and predictions Communicating results Inquiry Skills

Science at Home – it’s already happening! Cooking Weather awareness Caring for living things Observing your world Using technology What else is your family already doing?

A simple observation activity: Draw 1 of the following: A turtle, a squirrel, Or a rabbit Then….
