2009 PCD Showcase Clinical Scenario PCD Scenario - Overview Male patient, 65 years, coronary artery disease, moderate COPD (smoker), compensated renal insufficiency... Adenocarcinoma of the lower esophagus (close to the entry into the stomach), scheduled for gastrectomy and distal, transabdominal esophagectomy.

2009 PCD Showcase Clinical Scenario PCD Scene #1: OR Patient needs full invasive CV monitoring. Patient will get peridural catheter for postoperative pain management. Patient requires perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis with vancomycin and a third generation cefalosporine.

2009 PCD Showcase Clinical Scenario PCD Scene #2: ICU After surgery patient remains intubated as planned and is transferred to ICU. After initial stabilization, rapid weaning of the ventilator. Tight glycemic control. Extubation after 12 hours after admission. Discharge to SDU after 36 hours.

2009 PCD Showcase Clinical Scenario PCD Scene #3: Step Down Unit On SDU patient require still monitoring of HR, BP (NIBP or CNAP), RR and SpO2 (the latter two for his COPD and because of PCA). Antibiotics scheduled for 72 hours. Vancomycin should be infused over 60 minutes via IV device
