10/29/09 BR- Who is this? What is his role? Today: Continuing with Egyptian Gods and Goddesses

Egyptian Pantheon  Lots of gods and goddesses for lots of different things  Can be confusing because importance of figures shift over time and sometimes the names of people change and symbols are mixed or combined.  Different cities worshipped some gods more than others  Gods (their statues) were kept in temples and were taken care of by priests (fed real food and talked to or even entertained)  List of Egyptian gods and goddesses List of Egyptian gods and goddesses List of Egyptian gods and goddesses

Images of the gods  Write down the name and a short description. Make a note of any special symbols that give you clues to who they are.

Re (or Ra) God of the sun. Responsible for all life. Father to all the gods. Recognizable by the red sun disk.

Ma’at Ma’at is the goddess of balance, justice, truth. The ostrich feather on her head is her symbol. Sometimes you will see her represented only by the feather

Amun Amun (ah-moon) Creator god. Also known as Amun- Re. He replaces Re or (Ra) in the New Kingdom.

Shu  God of the air and is married to Tefnut.  His head is covered with feathers

Tefnut  Goddess of moisture (water/rain). Mother of Geb and Nut.

Geb and Nut  Geb is the god of earth (green and leafy) and Nut is the goddess of the heavens (that’s why she looks like he’s made of stars) were the children of Shu and Tefnut. Bastet and Montu  Bastet (cat or lioness) and Montu (two plumed hawk) were both deities associated with war.

Neith  Goddess of war and hunting

Osiris God of the dead or the underworld or afterlife. Green symbolizes death and rebirth. Husband of Isis. Killed by brother Seth. Father of Horace. White wrapping symbolizes mummification.

Isis - Wife of Osiris Worshiped as the ideal mother, wife, patron of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans, the downtrodden, as well as listening to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats and rulers. Isis is the Goddess of motherhood and fertility

Hathor (ha-tor) Goddess of women (protecting mother goddess) who is symbolized by cows horns holding a sun disk.

Horus Hawk headed god who is the son of Isis and Osiris. Is born after Isis reassembles Osiris and is made to get revenge on Seth and to restore peace and balance to the land. Sometimes has a sun disk. Wedjat - Eye of Horus

Nepthys Nepthys is the sister of Isis and is associated with nursing, caring, and protecting of people. She is married to Seth and important in the Osiris myth for helping gather up the pieces of Osiris.

Ptah A god associated with helping to create (build the world) and that’s why he’s worshipped by people that build things. He is symbolized by his blue cap and mummy wrapping (white)

Seth (or Set) The god of darkness, desert, storms, and chaos. He is the jealous brother of Osiris. He kills Osiris and takes control of the land. The land suffers greatly. Isis and Nepthys (Seth’s wife) conspire to bring back Osiris in order to create Horus. Horus chases off Seth but fights a continual struggle with him every day. Part of the day Horus wins (daylight/goodness) but part of the day Seth wins (darkness/evil).

Thoth God of writing, counting and record keeping. He is the scribe of the gods. Most importantly he tallies your life on the day of your soul’s judgment.

Anubis Jackal-headed god. Ferryman of the dead, associated with mummies. Anubis is responsible for guiding your spirit in the afterlife

Ammut “The swallower” This guy was responsible for devouring your heart if it was not judged to be free of sin (if it weighed more than the feather of Ma’at.)

Other Symbols Was staff - symbolized power Djed Pillar - symbolized stability Ankh - symbolized life

Assignment - Due on Thursday, October 29 Read the story of Seth, Osiris, Isis, and their son Horace (Horus) (pp ). Create a six panel cartoon that tells the story of Osiris. Let’s work on it now!
