Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program

What is fisheries science? The study of marine, estuarine and/or freshwater fisheries, which in turn refers to catching fish or aquatic invertebrates for commercial, recreational or subsistence purposes. Fisheries science includes many areas of research, such as studying aquatic populations, habitats, ecological health, biodiversity and resource management as well as the economics and sociology of fisheries and fishers. Aquatic resources management refers to the process of attempting to control aquatic populations within their shared habitat through science-based practices in order to conserve the aquatic resource as a whole.

The “Hutton Program” is a mentoring & internship program for high school students designed to stimulate career interest in fisheries among young people and attract underrepresented groups to the profession, such as minorities and women.

Diversity within organizations & professions: – Brings multiple perspectives & ideas – Enhances problem-solving, better solutions – Enables organizations to connect with a larger segment of society – Ensures growth & stability The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program - Bauer, Organizational Behavior, 2014
