Discovery Learning Center Mission: To advance research that revolutionizes learning, especially in the STEM disciplines Vision: To contribute in novel ways to the science of learning To redesign educational practices that (re)engage and prepare 21st century learners and teachers To develop and exploit new interactive technologies that promote learning To promote educational equity for underrepresented students and enhance diversity among students, teachers, and University faculty www.purdue.edu/dp/learningcenter/ ■ (765) 494-6717 ■ Burton D. Morgan Center, Room 120

Research Foci enhanced understanding of learning and assessment design and implementation of innovative educational programs and practices development and application of new interactive learning technologies Interns for Indiana CASPiE Gaming www.purdue.edu/dp/learningcenter ■ (765) 494-6717 ■ Burton D. 3 Our Grand Challenge Prepare students and employees for the high tech knowledge economy Advance scientific and information literacy ClassroomWorkplace Society Improve the quality of life for residents of Indiana and beyond by enhancing learning Indiana develop ideas that have immediate impact and nurture lifelong learning Transform educational practices from P-20 www.purdue.edu/dp/learningcenter ■ (765) 494-6717 ■ Burton D. Morgan Center, Room 120 Discovery Learning Center

Interns for Indiana Goals Stimulate Indiana economic development by providing high quality, low cost talent to high tech start-up companies and by retaining more highly qualified college graduates in the state. Outcomes Six IfI students have each started their own company > 27 students have been hired full- time by their internship company 80% of IfI students reported increased interest in working at a start-up company 62% of IfI students reported heightened interest in starting their own company 72% of IfI students take jobs in Indiana after graduation (compared to 56% for Univ.) www.purdue.edu/dp/learningcenter ■ (765) 494-6717 ■ Burton D. Morgan Center, Room 120 Discovery Learning Center

Goals This project will develop a series of electronic field trips in comparative biology for middle school audiences that will: Increase student understanding of science and research and career opportunities, Enhance student interest in science Make University researchers and laboratories accessible to students across the state (particularly in resource-limited rural areas) Increase interest among girls and underrepresented minorities Outcomes Development for this project begins fall 3007. Purdue is the first Veterinary School funded by HHMI. Electronic Field Trips in Comparative Biology Howard Hughes Medical Institute www.purdue.edu/dp/learningcenter ■ (765) 494-6717 ■ Burton D. Morgan Center, Room 120 Discovery Learning Center

The Center for Authentic Science Practice in Education (CASPiE) Goals This innovative project is developing and testing a new approach to undergraduate science education with the goal of retaining and graduating more science majors, particularly women and ethnic minorities. The new education approach combines access to research experiences for freshmen and sophomores as part of the mainstream curriculum, remote use of research grade instrumentation, and the creation of collaborative learning environments. Outcomes CASPiE participants, compared with non-participants, better understand how chemistry labs relate to real research, have more confidence in their ability to explain a chemistry experiment to students and instructors, are more interested in science and science careers, and plan to use the skills and knowledge they gain from the labs. www.purdue.edu/dp/learningcenter ■ (765) 494-6717 ■ Burton D.
